Brisbane drivers face bicycle-awareness lessons to curb road rage, encourage cycling

BRISBANE drivers will be taught to curb their road rage towards cyclists in a bid to boost the number of two-wheeled commuters.

Just days after Tour de France-winning cyclist Cadel Evans branded Brisbane drivers ``unnecessarily nasty'', Lord Mayor Graham Quirk rolled out a new plan to increase cyclists in the city.

City Hall wants 20 per cent of commuters to walk or cycle by the year 2026 to help cut traffic congestion and said all road users needed to show better etiquette when sharing the bitumen.

``It aims to make active travel in Brisbane safer, more accessible and connected, create walking and cycling-friendly suburbs,'' he said.

Private-sector classes in ``cycling confidence'' are one of the proposals from the draft Brisbane Active Transport Strategy 2012-2026, along with a plan to educate drivers on safety awareness.

The plan also recommends bike path maps for smartphones, bike pit-stop stations with pumps and tools, and the construction of more cycleways away from cars and walkers.

The report will be released for consultation next week.

Yesterday Cadel Evans said this

"Some of the drivers were unnecessarily nasty," he said.

"We certainly have a lot of riders (in Brisbane) and most of the people ride very early here. When they get abuse from the cars, I can understand why (they ride so early)."
That’s it. That is all he said.

The Brisbane Courier Mail knows when it’s on a winner so a day later they stir the pot again with this rubbish

Backlash to Cadel Evans' blast over 'nasty' Brisbane drivers. There’s no story there but as of posting this thread there were 171 comments. Which I point out is very high by normal standards.

It’s funny though in a pathetic kinda way because they print these two stories the same day

For clarity Logan “lower socio-economic” is a separate city to Brisbane. Also note that there are only 40 comments in an article about real traffic problems but 5 times that if it’s anti-cyclist. Pathetic

Suncorp survey finds drivers think roads are too dangerous for cyclists

MORE than one in three drivers has had a close call with a cyclist and 6 per cent have collided with a rider, a survey shows.

The findings from a Suncorp survey to be released today follow comments from Tour de France winner Cadel Evans.

Evans was in Brisbane this week and complained about "nasty" drivers.

He said riders chose to hit the streets early to avoid conflict with car drivers.

Suncorp spokesman Duncan Bone said the survey showed about four out of five Brisbane motorists believed roads were dangerous for cyclists.

"This likely stems from recognition of cyclists being the most vulnerable road users, and a lack of trust on both sides," Mr Bone said.

"In any accident the cyclist always loses and taking this into consideration is an additional stress for drivers."

The research found 86 per cent of Queensland motorists reported having seen cyclists breaking the law or riding dangerously and 70 per cent believed drivers need to pay more attention to cyclists.

Bicycle Queensland general manager Ben Wilson said it was unfortunate Evans had had a bad experience while riding in Brisbane.

He said it was not uncommon for cyclists to have negative experiences on the road.

"He might have had a pretty ordinary experience and sadly a lot of people do have them, whether they are riding bicycles or driving," he said.

"It's not the first time I've heard that, I heard that about almost every state in Australia."

An online poll by The Courier-Mail this week asked readers whether cyclists should pay registration. It found most of those polled agreed. More than 3000 people lodged their votes and nearly 59 per cent said cyclists should pay registration with the rest disagreeing.

Cyclist Natasha Georgios, 40, from Morningside, in Brisbane's east, said drivers could improve their habits and show more respect to cyclists.

"I think some of the behaviour from car drivers could improve," she said.

"I think if they cycled themselves they might have a better appreciation."

Triathlete Brad Welch, 39, from Upper Kedron, in Brisbane's north, blamed infrastructure for bad behaviour on roads.

"I can understand the frustrations of drivers because of the way a lot of roads are built - like with the older roads - the infrastructure is not there and there are no shoulders to ride on," he said.

"There are not enough dedicated bike lanes."

Some confusion exists over what bike rules apply in Queensland, but cyclists of any age are permitted to ride on footpaths. They must however, give way to pedestrians.

Cyclists are also permitted to ride two abreast.

They can reach up to four cyclists abreast if a pair is overtaking another pair.

-----------

RULES FOR RIDERS

* All cyclists in Queensland are permitted to ride on footpaths unless there is a "NO BICYCLES" sign.

* Cyclists are permitted to ride two abreast and can reach up to four cyclists abreast if a pair is overtaking another pair.

* Ride within 1.5m of the other rider if riding two abreast.

* Ride as close to the left side of the road as possible.

* Cyclists are not permitted to ride across a pedestrian crossing; they must dismount from their bike.

LOL - the paper is trying to make out that motorists are genuinely concerned for cyclist safety. Read the comments from the previous days :notamused:

LMAO that the poll was pro-registering cyclists. Be very careful what you wish for because paying rego will see serious changes for the better for cyclists and much much more pain for motorists. Bring it on :D

Driving in Brisbane is worse than any other place I have been to. Possible reasons include......
[1] Twisting winding dead end streets and lack of freeways leads to greater frustration.
[2] Hot humid uncomfortable weather means drivers are shat off before they even get in the car.
[3] Lots of rain meaning roads become clogged with people who would otherwise get a bus.
[4] More rednecks, haha.

Can you please elaborate on the benefits and pains?

Sorry

I suggest that the cyclists will demand appropriate infrastructure. This will come at a cost to motorists as infrastructure in the form of lane size which is limited and should cyclists be given space to ride safely

FWIW I post as “KonaCommuter" on BNA and will change my handle on here as soon as I can

I found this comment from the article, to be very telling.

"But Kevin of south of the CBD said he "totally agreed" with Evans' comments.

"Drivers in Brisbane are inconsiderate and only think of themselves," he wrote.

"I do a bit of walking and some times I wonder if it's the national sport and (drivers) try to get as close as they can to cyclists and pedestrians."

Especially the last sentence about motorists to get as close as they can, to cyclists', and pedestrians. Because that sort of behavior doesn't only happen in Brisbane. It is horrendous in the D.C.-Metro region.
