Wife of US Senator Sues to Stop Bike Lane

The wife of US Senator, Charles Schumer, recently sued the City of New York to have the bike lane in the Prospect Park section of Brooklyn removed. Fortunately, the case was dismissed.

Funny thing, Charles Schumer is an avid cyclist, and was photographed recently riding on the same bike path his wife tried to have removed. I guess someone is going to be sleeping on the couch for the next couple of weeks.

See here: http://gothamist.com/2012/03/18/pigs...chumer_bik.php

As someone who rides on that bike lane often, the REAL issue here is a few people lost parking spots. Boo hoo.

I'm no fan of that kind of bike lane. A bikelane hidden from traffic by parked cars, every intersection is an accident waiting to happen.

Unless it only exists next to the park and there are no streets going through the park.

It only exists next to the park. I believe there is one intersection with a small road through the park, but visibility is good. I think it's a good lane. If only we could keep the pedestrians out of it!

Here it is on google maps: http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll...&z=15&lci=bike

Turn on the cycling layer, and you'll see a path running along Prospect Park West. It starts at Grand Army Plaza in the north, and runs southwest to Bartel Pritchard Square. It is interrupted once by a spur off of West Drive, which is the road that circles the inside of the park. This road is open to cars but only at certain times--I'm not sure what they are. Maybe rush hour?

Because there's an occasional pedestrian in it? Yeah, welcome to New York, pal.

Is that a two-way or a one-way street that the bike lane is on? I'm not a fan of two-way bike lanes on one-way roads. I have at least one here in St. Pete and while I'll ride it in the direction of traffic I don't know that I'd feel comfortable riding on it opposite of traffic.

In our case, though there aren't any parked cars as a barrier just a low median.

Yep, that's what we do. They're an annoyance. So are cars. So are cyclists going the wrong way. So are tourists. So are guys who live in Hawaii that think they know what's best for NYC!

One thing we don't do, however: we don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

But apparently you are willing to build defective cribs to put the baby in.
