Critical Mass San Diego Style.

Video is from my son... showing that the nut doesn't fall far from the tree.

I myself am not a big fan of CM... while I think it was a good idea when first thought of, it has been turned into something of a rolling party these days, thus losing all of it's original meaning.

On the other hand, here are hundreds of cyclists out riding on the street... with police escort... can't be all bad.

Doohickie et. al., enjoy.

SDCM lost the original mission of CM several years ago. There are too many people with alternate agendas and/or the need to make it about confrontation.

I think that *is* the true meaning of CM. It makes cycling look fun with the goal of getting people to get the old bike down off the hooks in the garage and give 'er a go. We had a guy ask us what we were doing Friday and we told him about CM, and invited him to next month's ride. He gave us a thumbs up and said maybe he would. He was at least 70. I thought it was pretty cool.

Well that is certainly a side benefit... but the name alone gives hints as to what it WAS SUPPOSED to be about... that when a "critical mass" of cyclists is reached, then automobiles do not have domain of the streets. That is what it is supposed to be about.

That folks are having fun, riding bikes, and in this case, being supported by the local PD... well that isn't all bad now is it?

A&S talking about what Critical Mass is supposed to be about, is like, well, it's like a bunch of motorists talking about how people are supposed to ride bikes. ("On the dang sidewalk!")

It's videos and rides like this that give our hobby a bad name and more ammo for anti bike people. I have nothing against getting a bunch of people together and having a fun ride but c'mon......Scaring peds and dogs, riding on the sidewalk, zig zagging in between cars, blocking intersections REALLY? And you just know the music is to cover the yelling, cursing, chanting. Can't help but feel sorry for anyone caught in the path of or living in the neighborhood of this free for all.

It's not a hipster thing. It's a recession thing.

FYI, since I know the cyclists in the vid, I can assure you that they were not drinking PBR... they prefer good IPAs and other microbrews.

PBR is lame yellow fizzy drool.
