Possbile bike defect leads to cyclist death

If this is due to a recalled part, it's a tragic accident that could have been prevented. Everyone check your bikes for safety recalls. Maybe someone could post a searchable national database that lists recalls. I don't have one handy. I haven't posted in years, but figured this one was important enough to spread the word. |

It's been at least 20 years since I was a tech snob so I haven't been enticed to ride anything but steel. Had CF frames been available then, I wonder if I would have gotten one? I remember that I was suspicious of the Alan glued aluminum frames, so I think I would have also worried about the not-yet-mature CF technology. Recall or not, I would think everybody with a CF is in tune with the possibility of sudden and complete failure and so would be wise to check for problems (is this possible though?).
Condolences to the victims family. -G |
This possibility is not limited to carbon fiber. A few decades ago our tandem had a sudden and complete failure of the steel steerer tube of the fork resulting in instant loss of the front wheel and the bottom of the head tube impacted the pavement. Fortunately the injury was relatively minor but could have been much worse if we had been going faster.
