for people in the San Jose area Dutch Cycling Experts offer workshop
There will be a workshop in San Jose with Dutch Cycling experts in attendance. a short excerpt from the press relesae:
SAN JOSE, Calif. – What would make you more likely to ride a bike to work, school, or run errands in the Capital of Silicon Valley? Although San José’s portion of trips by bike has grown 67% in the last year, currently only 1% of all trips is made by bike. Next week, experts from the Dutch Cycling Embassy will work with a small group of City staff and community representatives to develop design solutions for two challenging cycling locations in downtown San José.
The public is invited to the Opening Session and Closing Session of this two-day ThinkBike Workshop, scheduled for Monday, Oct. 22 and Tuesday, Oct. 23. In the Opening Session, the Dutch Cycling Embassy will provide an overview of bike planning in the Netherlands and City staff will present the two San José design challenges to be studied. In the Closing Session, the design solutions developed by the Dutch and City team partners will be presented.

Will the city actually adopt any recommendations, or is this merely to tick off Americans by showing them the limitations of their auto centric cities?

Sounds cool. I wish Copenhagen would do that, too. We've still got a lot to learn from the Dutch.

i went to the closing session. It was pretty cool... about 50 people showed up
They talked about two specific cases in downtown, one about getting people from the Guadelupe trail at Woz Way to other parts of south downtown and eventually coyote creek. the proposed solution was to turn Balbach into a bike boulevard and convert south market into 3 lanes with a wide protected bike/pedestrian path. The vision was pretty appealing
The second case was making 1st/2nd streets from San Carlos to St John more bike friendly. The most conservative solution was to simply paint a green lane and add "sharrows", while the most extreme extreme involved moving the LTR tracks to the bus lane and having buses and LTR share a lane, and converting the car lane into bike use only. In this version the wider sidewalks could be used for sidewalk cafes or other such things.
I'm not sure if any of the proposed solutions will be enacted... some of them seemed like there could be lots of opposition and/or could cost a lot of $.
