it wasn't the seat post, it was the metal frame that supports the seat base and the cushion
i've seen seats break before in a similar fashion. fortunately they didn't cause injury.

Painful to be sure. Hope all turns out well for the young man. It sounds as if it will. Makes you want to get a Kevlar chamois.
At the bike co-op and through fixing up a few bikes, I have seen seats that have come away from one or both rails. This was a Giant, but I've usually seen it on lower end bikes, not to say that this was necessarily the original Giant seat.

The problem is not with the bike, the cheap seat is clamped on a seat post. This seat pivoted up and exposed the seat rail which detached from the plastic seat base. He was impaled by the seat rail.
The bike had a quick release on the frame. I guess those rescue ppl don't know how to use this.

Having the saddle pop off the rails likely could've been prevented.... wobbly saddle best be replaced before it falls off altogether and stabs you.
Seen a college student with a detached saddle; watched with morbid amusement as he reached below himself to balance the plastic shell on the broken rails then pedaled off. the LBS where I work not 30 feet away, I guess he didn't feel like buying a new saddle.....

Looks like a Giant Oyea made in China for a Chinese market. The wuestion is - was it poor manufacturing or poor maintenance? That rear rim has so much crud on it someone obviously has no idea how to lube a drivetrain.

I think you could say that this rider gets the point that recumbents cause less pain!!!

This kind of accident is why I own, and use, a torque wrench.
Most bolts I found I had pretty well tightened. Crank arms, however, I NEVER used to tighten enough! Those are pretty important. Seat clamp is just as important, if not more so...
I hope he heals well and gives his bike a once-over if he decides to ride again. Talk about painful
