Obvious there's some very intelligent people at work here
Hello all,
This was pointed out to me and basically we're very confused here! Of course none of us had ever reach anything such as attending such a prestigious institution as Caltech. We probably would not be in such a quandary! What has gotten all of us in confused state of mind and in a rut is this signage,
Which can be found here, https://caltechbikelab.blogspot.com/
Can anyone here possibly enlighten us on what is this depicting?

Driver in a right turn lane, cyclist going straight in center lane ??? Cyclist preparing to make left turn, driver going straight ??? While the sign might not be perfect, at least someone is acknowledging our right to use public roadways. Don't nitpick your friends.

It's just an advisory sign, reminding car drivers that bikes use the same road, and to give proper room.....

I thought it was something about cyclists overtaking cars going down big hills but the rider doesn't look like he's tucked into a sufficiently aero position for it to be that.
Maybe it's showing a car and a cyclist side by side in a traffic jam? Or it could indicate the best driving position to hand supplies from the car to the cyclist, like they do in races like the Tour de France.

It's a new loaner-type system called the "half-commute." The roads to and from certain locations are being re-done so that only bikes can travel one direction, only cars the other. The sign is there to indicate which side of the road is legal for bicycle use: if you see the back of the sign, you're going the wrong way.

It's a pictogram. It depicts an idea, a concept, a way of thinking. It is supposed to be understood with a quick look. You're not supposed to analyze it in great detail.

When a driver sees this sign as they drive along, it depicts several ideas. First and most obvious is that the road is to be shared. With who? The signs designers did not think that a driver would be concerned overmuch with other cars in thier lane, but rather a bicycle in thier lane. The other thing to be shared in conjunction with bicycle in thier lane is a car in the oncoming lane. Thus the car is shown as an oncoming one, with headlights and the driver sitting in the drivers seat as seen from the front.
I really feel for those who have the job of constantly making foolproof signs for better and constantly improving fools. Sure they screw up sometimes, but not here.
Of course I could be the fool and the sign actualy show that the road is to be shared with a cyclist only when there is a US postal service delivery worker with a right hand drive car in your lane. This must be it, what was I thinking.

I also get this message and follow the advice on lanes wide enough for safe sharing. Otherwise, I share the lane in the same way that motor vehicles share it, sequentially rather than parallel.

I thought that that might work, but it doesn't. It's still wrong. That is if we're talking about both the driver and the cyclist is going in the same direction. Frankly the only way this would work is if it was an American car in England or Australia or the opposite here in the states.

Hmmmm....... Doing a good o' Google search on this Share the Road theme bring up quite a collective of signs. Favorite has to be the Share the Road with Your Local Pacer sign.
If anyone is really gonzo for the sign in the original post, looks like you can order them like there's no tomorrow! My fav!
