Ancient Mayan pyramid destroyed for road fill

Disgusting! Even cultural artifacts are no longer sacred for the unquenchable thirst for roads, roads, roads!

(CNN) -- A Mayan pyramid that has stood for 2,300 years in Belize has been reduced to rubble, apparently to make fill for roads.

Nothing new, the Egyptian pyramids were looted and stripped over the millennium, and one of the reasons that they are probably still standing is that looters of ancient times lacked the machinery of today.

I was in Belize a couple of months ago, and toured some of the ruins. Our guide explained to us that building over ruins was fairly commonplace, because there was almost nowhere in the country that didn't have them. Historically, the Mayan population of this area was huge, in the millions. Now there's only about 330,000 in Belize. The roads are mostly crappy.

The US and Canadian gov'ts have been working towards obtaining and building over native land and settlements and extracting every resource underneath them since they got here hundreds of years ago. No different, imo.
Not to mention even our rich agricultural lands have mostly turned into WalMarts and sprawl.

/topic derailment

Good question, and has already been asked. No reply posted.

Apparently A&S is to be a dumping ground for rants about what "they" are doing, and not happy stories

I guess the question is, will said road have a bike lane. It is said the Maya did not use the wheel, much less bicycles, so seriously...

And not only is this not a Cycling advocacy nor safety topic, seems like its a issue for the Belize government and citizens to decide, unless you want the US to take over that country also**********

Now I've got this image of flintstones style bikes with stone wheels going down the road...
