lol

Trying to outsprint a dog will definitely trigger its predator instinct. Better to slow down or stop to shout and defend if necessary. Back in the day my frame pump did double duty as dog defense, like one of these:

Jump off the bike and use it to block the dog from attacking you while yelling at it and acting a fool.

When a dog is chasing you, that's the best bet IMO. It's worked for me. Either the dog is just chasing you and they quit once the game is over, or if they are aggressive, they'll back off if you meet them with the same aggression. Basic fight or flight stuff.

Trying to fiddle with a can of mace/pepper spray, if you even have time to get it out of your jersey pocket, is better in theory than in practice.

Kill the dog and eat it raw in public as an example to any other dogs in the area that you are the apex predator.

EDIT: Wear its teeth on a necklace and display its skull on your bike for extra effect.

THIS exactly.
worked for me against two medium sized dogs.

i had passed them twice before, each time they chased me for a full block.

the third time i said "**** it", jumped off my bike, put the bike in front of me like a shield and yelled "**** OFF" ...thats when they stopped in their tracks.
i raised the bike up like i was going to hit them with it and they went running. thats when i felt like a tough-guy/manly-man and yelled as they ran away "THATS WHAT I THOUGHT" :)

next time i rode by they just looked at me while i stared them down.

What does this have to do with SSFG? Seems like another dumb A&S thread to me...

Words of a wise man.

Moved to A and S from SSFG.

The one and only time I had a dog chasing me I was about to unclip and kick it in the head as I went past but it changed angle to approach from behind rather than the side, so I turned my head and growled at it loudly, at which point it stopped dead and decided not to chase me any more.

I'd really hope never to have to hurt someone's pet but if it does come down to self defence my primary goal is to neutralise the threat as fast as possible, and if that means the dog is critically injured that's just too bad.

I had one chase me in a rural area once, when I was much younger. I remember it being huge (but it probably wasn't).

It was snapping at my leg so I kicked it in the face. The kick didn't really connect--more of a glancing blow--but it stopped chasing.

If weight and size is an issue you might try a Walther PPS

9X19 mm. It will fit in your jersey pocket.

I can't even believe there's discussion about carrying guns to shoot at dogs. It's ****ing disgusting.

Want to know what I did the last time I was chased by a dog? I stopped and began to pet it.

+1

I'm sure there are vicious dogs around, but I have yet to run across one.

You are disgusted that people donīt want to get mauled or killed by dogs and want to defend themselves? Dogs kill people, plenty of people have a reminder of a dog attack for the rest of their life due to permanent injuries. Perhaps you can ask your fellow cyclist, Loose Chain, I believe.

Chris516 08-07-13 06:45 PM

Another dog-hating thread, pathetic. I will grant the benefit of the doubt, to those that have been chased by dogs. But when I encounter a dog, leash, or no leash, I befriend the dog. Instead of thinking it has 'cooties' or something else.

Cars kill people too. Maybe I should start shooting at them when I feel threatened.
