More of that fine ALOHA spirit towards cyclists in Hawaii

Two cyclists and the metric century ride executive director assaulted on this Sunday. 23 year old motorist arrested, then released.

And some in BFs think that because they never had a motorist run in their city, that the few rush hour commuting run ins I have had, must be my fault.

According to comments...
Quote:
The syspect has had 25 cases brought against him in the last five years for charges including speeding (57 in a 25), DUI, expired safety check, no seatbelt, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and lack of insurance. How long until he kills someone?
Now I have no idea how true this is, but at least two commenters brought up a history of this guy...

I don't know what it is with a number of motorists and their not like having a cyclist riding in the roadway. Just yesterday, I took the lane to pass an obstruction in the bike lane that I was riding in and a motorist, who was over a block behind me, accelerates his vehicle and closes the gap to two feet, then weaves back and forth in the same travel lane while still tailgating me at a distance of two feet, and then slowly passes me after I return to riding in the bike lane after passing the obstructed portion of the bike lane.

This is not even close to the first time that I felt like I'm waving a red cape in the middle of a bull ring when taking the lane.

It's not just cyclists that drive some motorists insane, it's just that cyclists are easy to pick on and threaten because of they are on a bicycle. I have dash cam footage of aggressive driver's who aggressively tailgate and pass inappropriately on single lane roads despite me already going 15mph OVER the posted speed limit. Once around me then they hound the next car that is holding them up. I shudder to think what some of these drivers do/could do when blocked or slowed by a bicycle and the chances they take with other people's lives.

Good on the ride organizer, I liked some of his comments and will use them.

I looked it up. It is all true. The 25 cases are from 2010 to today. Many of the 25 cases included multiple charges. He got 3 days in jail, $100 fine and $305 in other fees for the DUI in 2013.

This is not too surprising based on the records of several of the drivers that have harassed me.

I should add that one of his 2010 offenses was driving on a bike path.

It's obviously CBHI's fault. The psycho motorist was only there because he was looking for CB. When he didn't find him, he needed to get some training in for next time.

The weather kind of sucked and there was a good bit of rain between Laie and Kahana so visibility wasn't that great. Then there is decent rideable shoulder maybe 60-70% but then the rest there isn't and you have the problem if you FRAP the road isn't that wide , and if you take the lane you WILL piss off motorists, as it's the only road and can get frustrating even without many cyclists out there. That being said I didn't have (or see) any problems, other than the weather. At least between Laie and Kahuku the Mormons are all at church or at home, so things are kind of quiet along that section (and PCC and businesses are all closed for Sunday as well). From Sunset Beach to Haleiwa was the usual tourist madhouse -- cyclists are the least of the worries.

If only I knew the license plate # of his car, then I could confirm this suspicion.

I am glad they arrested him, that clearly made him avoid my commute route this morning.

The 3 days in jail is on par with my locale, minus months of license suspension, and community service, but $405 in fines for a DUI? Amazing. Here in my locale, the same fees would be close to 10 times that amount.

Judging by CB's response, your comment maybe closer to the truth than you may think.

In one of the cases, maybe a DUI or finally this DUI but it is handled as a separate court case, he did get a 18 month license suspension. He has been stopped many times and cited for driving on a suspended license. It is hard to tell from the limited records online, but it seems he has a good lawyer, who gets his cases continued until the cop misses a court date. He appears to have gotten off of two prior DUIs and his last one was listed as his first DUI for legal purposes.

Another report on the incident:

Hawaii Driver Allegedly Hits Bikers On Purpose At Bike Safety Event

This assault is starting to look a lot like the California assault of the CEO cyclist:
