The cyclist was 24. This needs to be moved to A&S.

Is it really that bothersome to you? This is the one spot that is established by demographics rather than subject. It's really not that big a problem. There are all manner of threads here that could go in another forum but they don't because we are here for the perspective of the 50+ crowd.

Since many 50+ are not as tech savvy, it is proper to have a thread here that informs us that NYPD has discovered that iPhones are being used to shoot cops and maybe other people.

Here in Illinois we had probably the most anti-cop-filming laws in the country, with aggressive enforcement in Chicago. The state fought all the way to the Supreme Court (which declined to hear their appeal) to keep them, and lost. It's over for out-and-out making it against the law, so police are going to use "creative" tactics to do an end around citizens' rights to film them. Police are trying desperately to put the cell phone camera back in the bottle.

It's really too bad that you are allowing a few whiners to act as the morality police and have threads moved out of 50+. Especially when half the threads there could be moved to other fora. This just undermines the 50+ forum. Really who does it hurt to allow 50+ posters to discuss all manner of cycling topics from their own unique perspective? Those people who are adherents of the "I know what's best for you" philosophy of life have nothing better to do with their life force I guess.

Kind of reminds me of Russia under Stalin or Germany under Hitler. What happens outside in public is something that should never be supressed. What is even worse this kind of thing seems to be gettin more common.

This sums up why I rarely check in with the 50+ any more.

While I was able to find a description of cell phone cases that contain stun guns, I cannot seem to find any basis for the claim of having concealed guns in iphones, anybody find any credence to the NYPD story?

Well, there is this -- snopes.com: Cell Phone Guns -- and that was real, but no, there's no credence to this claim that "because people are using iPhones as guns and shooting cops through the camera lens" -- that doesn't even make sense, a bonafide phone *** would fire along the length of the ***.

And if there's anything police should be knowledgeable about (beyond the laws that they enforce), it's guns and how they work, so this incident sounds like a failure on both understanding the law and how guns work (among other failures.)

edit: Heh, the BF auto-censor replaces the "three letter word for firearm" with stars, but doesn't mind it in plural.

Why would a police officer not like to be filmed if they were proud of their job?

Because they are consistantly wrong, abuse their power and dont want to be sued for it.

Such a sad truth, isn't it. I want to believe in human virtues, but it's getting harder and harder each time I run into an article like this.

Same here, the place gives me the impression as being the geriatric version of the Road Cycling forum.

Exactly!
My thoughts too about the tone of the 50+; though less dominated by a coffee klatch jabbering clique than it used to be.

Whenever I mentioned the fact that I mix it up with rush hour traffic while riding my bicycle with panniers loaded down with groceries, I get the impression that some on the 50+ forum must think that I just arrived from another planet.

What are they going to do when a cyclist with a gopro camera mounted on his helmet comes along and films what is happening simply by looking at it? The taxpayers of Las Vegas paid a handsome amount of money recently to a "concerned citizen" who came to the front driveway of his own house and filmed an incident that wasn't very positive for the officer involved. He was arrested and we paid when the judgement went against the policeman.

Too often, in that situation the confiscate the camera and erase the video file.

A few people are getting video cameras or phone apps that transmit the video to a web/cloud file to prevent the cops from erasing the evidence against them.
