I'm shocked I haven't seen any of the work of Helmet Newton here, although he really doesn't have a cookie policy, claiming not to be one most conveniently.
When in a pinch, one's tinfoil hat takes the rust from your chrome parts. I was not born with any.

Mention the "prolific, widely imitated fashion photographer whose provocative, erotically charged black-and-white photos were a mainstay of Vogue and other publications" and it's almost impossible not to think of this iconic image:
I believe Newton lost the Nabisco account, but with typical artistic temperament, laughed and said he didn't give a fig.

Confession time: I've had other things going on in my life besides the helmet thread. Binge-watching The Americans, for example.
Cold war intrigue: SMIDSY, or witness?
I've also done loads of cycling, but let's not go too far OT.
Welcome back fellow HAT Syndrome sufferers. Once you've got it you've always got it, no matter how long you stay away between hits. @mconlonx, I checked your recent activity to make sure you're still with us; post #29 had me concerned.
Now then. What happened with Why helmets are the last thing we should be worrying about? Thread started on the 14th and not closed until the 19th? It's almost as if the moderators also have other things going on in their lives.
Tell me, when did the tension of unlocked freedom begin to mount? Some must've been itching for moderating powers from day 1, while others clearly took it in their stride and posted despite the naughtiness, perhaps savoring the thrill.
I propose an experiment. Whenever the word 'helmet' is used, the forum software changes it to, say, 'salami'. Thus one of the quotes in the locked thread is rendered thus:
It may not change many more minds than helmet threads do, but it will definitely get some heads scratched, which as we all know, is a sign of thoughtful contemplation: surely a good thing.
Also works for drugs
Remember when Luca Paolini tested positive for salami?

There's a reason that people in the U.S. who wear salamis are 9 to 13 times as likely to be killed riding a bicycle as those in The Netherlands, Denmark, and many other countries who do not wear salamis. We focus on the wrong things…

"Hi…My name is Jim, and I’m addicted to Mirror Threads..."Hi Jim."
God grant me the ability to see the things I cannot see; courage to wear the things I wear; and wisdom to know I’m right...
First, apologies for the acronym: actually it's Helmet Thread Addiction Syndrome. However, I'm sure you can agree that as a name, HAT Syndrome beats HTA Syndrome hands down. What's a little dyslexia between friends?...
But enough preamble. Are you addicted to the helmet thread? If so, it's nothing to be ashamed of. We're all addicted to something....
If you're the sort who's going to worry anyway, there are certain classic signs….
If you think your addiction is a problem, there are steps you can take:…
- Use alternate coping skills. At least that's what Dr. Phil says. Replace this thread addiction with another one....
If you do decide to seek help from a qualified mental health practitioner, you may be able to get a reduced rate by folding your helmet thread addiction into your overall forum addiction.

…I find mirrors so easy to use, and so helpful that I wear both right and left.

Sorry to take so long to respond. A "helmet" is a hat, only more styrofoamy. It has straps which make tipping it problematic.
Some jurisdictions require the wearing of this particular hat.
Some cyclists object; others do not. Compulsion aside, some wear a helmet; others do not. Even people who don't ride bikes have an opinion on them which they are often compelled to share. The subject is a reliable conversation starter. There is no end.
