Just about got hooked yesterday. I was on the bike path approaching an intersection. I checked behind me and saw no one in the right turn lane. I looked again as I got closer and saw and heard a guy turning from the middle lane. His tired squealed. Sigh.

I think a lot of people think that fatal right hooks are caused by cyclists overtaking to the right. I am not convinced of that at all.

Count me among those that think that SOME fatal right hooks are caused by cyclists overtaking on the right. Here in metro NY, it's nearly impossible to make a right turn without slowing down considerably, so while some drivers do pass and turn, others get passed before they turn.

Each accident is it's own story, and no two are identical.

But, while I can't prevent most classic right hooks (I've had my share), I can prevent many by being alert to what's happening around me, and either avoid them entirely, or manage them so there's less consequences.
