NYPD Won't Question Cyclist's Hit & Run Driver

"A 37-year-old cyclist who was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver in Bushwick early last month is still waiting for the New York Police Dept. to interview her alleged assailant.
But over a month after the crash, while the victim was hospitalized and lost thousands of dollars in wages, no charges have been filed—when she and her attorney last spoke with the NYPD, they were told the car's owner would be interviewed if police "had the time.""

While there is always another side to a story, this one seems seriously pathetic.

This is still very much modus operandi for the NYPD. Even if they did interview the driver, and by some miracle, arrest him the DA would probably refuse to file charges or have him plea to a rather minor traffic violation. Welcome to NYC where the cops are totally indifferent and the DAs lazy. Vision Zero has changed nothing.

That situation is not unique to NYC by any means, it's just amplified by the number of people affected.

Never suggested it was. However, the thread is talking about NYC and the NYPD. I will say that the NYPD and the DA allow drivers to get away with a lot more than most other cities would tolerate if they had NYC's population.

Bike stolen from locked car in Sun Valley (city of L.A.) in 1998. Police (Foothill Division, LAPD) took report over phone. Getting a copy of the report for insurance took almost six months.

Typical of the NYPD. Critical Mass, or not. It is still the same behavior from the NYPD.

What does critical mass have to do with this?

NYPD have stated that they only investigate crashes that involve fatalities. They've recently added something like 'or serious injury highly likely to result in death'.

Police are overworked and have been for decades. My Grandmother lived in the Hollywood Hills. One day when I was at her house over 40 years ago a kid on a skateboard hit a car at a stop sign. Kid was badly hurt, compound fracture. Fire, paramedics and a park ranger from Griffith Park had all come and gone before the police got there.

That said 30-40 years ago LAPD took hit and run very seriously. That is if you can give them anything to go on. As in if you have a license plate number they will be there within 24 hours to check for damage.

I know I was rear ended and saw it was a yellow car in the rear view window. I had started a right turn so it took a few seconds to start pursuit. Got the license of the only yellow car in sight. The bad news was it was not the one. Absolutely no damage and there would have been significant damage.

LAPD investigates accidents with serious injuries. My mother was in such a crash and I had the initial police report before she was out of Surgery. Yes the officer came to the hospital. At that point the severity of the injuries were unknown to him until he was there. He was there to get her statement, not possible as she was under a general at the time.
