Hit and Run.

A 14 year old was reported in the hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a pick up truck that left the scene. This occured at night on a two lane road with a rough shoulder, and on a curve. There are no lights. Most traffic on the road is moving at 55+. I've passed him while driving many times at the same time so I assume he was cummuting from town.

Here's the kicker: he always rides against traffic, at night, and no lights, and he has no front reflector (at least not so I've noticed). I've always pointed him out as a tragedy in the making, both for him and the driver who gets him.

This really hits home because it's only a mile from my house. It's a fairly small town so I won't be surprised if either the boy or the driver turn out to be friends of friends.

I frequently wish the local constabulary would stop kids like that who are oblivious to the law and are a danger to themselves.

Not that I want to start an "its was your fault" kind of a thread. But, if you have been seeing this kid, endangering their life and didn't tell it to his face then you are not a parent.

Yea! because nothing gets a 14yo boy to straighten up like the verbal lashing of a stranger.

Enjoy

I have seen some cyclists mostly kids riding against traffic at night and all of them had no lights...only the stock relectors... We (wife and I driving) could see them "barely". But not until we got really close. I see tons of bikes out (mostly kids) now...and everyone who is on the street is without helmets (don't flame me). I have seen other adults riding on the sidewalk most of them against traffic. There needs to be a massive PSA blitz around this time (spring / summer or even FALL). Most people give up bikes in the Winter. It is only the extremely crazy (like me) ;0) I have told some kids about lights and helmets but they just get a "dear in the hedlights" look. Hope the kid fares well.
