Legal question: Bike insurance?

Does anyone know if you can buy insurance for accidents while biking. I know that you can get your bike covered under a homeowenr's policy, but that simply covers physical damage to the bike. I am wondering if you can purchase a rider or something on your auto policy that would cover any persoanl injuries you might suffer while biking.

If you have homeowner or renter's insurance with liability coverage it may cover you for a cycling accident. You would need to check the policy or call your agent.

You need to get the best health insurance you can possibly get, for starters.

Related to insurance, how liable are bike shops if a bike that was purchased there (recently) breaks due to improper assembly? How does that all work?

In America, anyone can sue anyone for anything. It's not uncommon for the bike shop to be sued in the wake of an accident. For examples, see John Allen's page:

https://www.bikexprt.com/witness/captions.htm

Mr. Allen works as an expert witness in bicycle related litigation, among other things.

Anyone can sue for anything, but it's hard to win anything unless someone really did you wrong.

As to the question of the thread, kf5nd is right, what you're talking about is called, "health insurance."

I asked my renter's insurance, and they said they'd cover any accidents I had (I have Allstate Renter's Insurance).

You should be able to make a claim under your auto policy if you have an accident with a car. There is no rider available, but your policy covers you, the named insured for a loss involving another vehicle. Unless you have an assigned risk, liability only policy, your med pay and or UMBI will apply. If you are hit by an insured vehicle, unless you live in a no fault state, you can expect their insurance carrier to pay for your injuries and damages. Unless there is a huge question of liability, most insurance companies would rather settle with a cyclist or pedestrian than have the injured party get representation and possibly file suit. And if you're not seriously injured, I suggest you don't hire an attorney. The average claim payout increases by a large amount, but some pittance like $100 more is all the ends up in the injured party's pocket. The rest goes to the attorney.

I done some research in Australia and bike groups as part of your memberships covers you for accidents while biking.

Also in Australia we have what is called 3rd party where you are covered as a road user even if you don't drive.

Hope this helps as maybe where you have similar things especially with the bike group membership.

And you are right about the attorney (lawyer) as I got $8,000 and they got $25,000.

But then again the insurance company drag it on rather then settle which took years maybe it had something to do with the police blaming me I don't know.

In Australia they could be sued or be covered under business insurance.
