Bikes with wheelchair wheels on them
I think this is the best section to ask and google is not being helpful. A long while back somebody on Velospace did it to a fixie and I wanted to know if anybody else has done it to a bike.

You need the hand rails? One rim size for wheel chairs, is old 26 by 1 3/8" old 3 speeds used those..
of course , its just a hub bearing.. no drive typical hub one side, not a fork support..

Mostly looking for pictures, but nothing turns up. I think most would only work for a front wheel.

I could imagine using them as rears on a front wheel drive trike or handcycle trike.
Depending on what you have, you could also rebuild your one or both wheels to your needs, especially if you have pneumatic tires. ISO 540 is a common wheelchair size that is used on some bikes, but have fallen out of favor for ISO 520 instead.
If your goal is simply hard tires, Tannus makes a number of sizes of hard rubber bike tires.

No, no, no. back in 2011 or 12 a member on Velospace took the wheel OFF a wheelchair, took the tire OFF the wheel, changed the bearings, drilled a hole for a valvestem, slapped on a 650b tire and placed the assembly on a fixie.

I tried to find the thread last night and couldn't. I think he did it for gp. I've seen wheelchair wheels that would look dope on a bike, but he used one of the generic black plastic seven spoke ones. It's a strong wheel that basically survives being side loaded for years on end. I don't know how heavy they are. It was on the front and I've seen wheels on fixies that look like wheelchair wheels.

...but a minor quibble: 650b tires have a 584 mm bead. I could be wrong, but as far as I'm aware, wheelchair tires & rims don't come in that size. There are a whole bunch of others it could've been.
That complicates things a bit, though. ;-)

My wife is in a wheelchair, and I am in charge of its maintenance. Wheelchair wheels mostly have 540 mm rim diameters, 44 mm smaller than 650B. I also don't understand the need to drill for a valve stem since they are almost all pneumatic tires. The hubs use a push button through axle system with no provision for mounting any kind of hub or fixed gear. I am not sure how or why one would want to even try the conversion.

540 tires are a relatively common 24" wheel bike tire size, including some cyclocross 24" bikes.
However, 520 tires are becoming the dominant road tire size for kids.

You could just get a Colson...the company is Invacare now, they make wheelchairs, close enough I gather and Colsons are more stylish

Racing wheel chairs , have unusual wheels by nature of the competitions,,
May use 700c rims, because there is the most choice in premium tires,
and they're bigger diameter to cover more ground per rotation..
the hand rings are smaller,
for the same reason you pick a higher gear ..... to go faster..
...

Henry Ford built a four wheeled motorized bike, I can just weld two Schwinns together with a Yamaha 125 or 250cc and WHOOMP, motorized wheelchair. Has to be a hybrid electric or they'll never let me in the thrift store.

Skyway wheels make a 24” bicycle wheel, ready to use.
In the early 80s there was a Swedish plastic bike called Itera that used the 27”/ 630 mm wheel size. Would be quite easy to turn one of those front wheels into a fixie rear.
There are several Chinese sources of wheelchair-style bicycle wheels.

No... what it was, was a guy on Velospace took a regular generic plastic seven spoke wheel from a wheelchair, pressed in some sealed bearings and an axle, removed the handrail and drilled a hole for a presta.valve. Tossed it on his fixie. It was years ago and I was bored one day; It poped in my head, i tried looking for it, or any repeat of it. I figured the search was futile. It could've been on this other site I haven't been on in so long I can't remember it or begin to find any trace, much like this. I do thank those that tried.
