Building a mutt.....need advice on canty brakes

Building a mutt.....ok I'm on a very low low low low budget. I have this old Cro-Moly Mtn Bike frame with good componatry(well...for its age anyway). Except for the wheels....they are totally shot.....well I have a set of 29 inch wheel from a beat up old road bike. They actually fit pertectly and I actually have 1 inch of clearence. Just one problem though. My old canty break can't reach....can the canty mounts be grinded off and relocated a little higher or arfe they mounted inside of the frame?...I am after more milage for my riding effort....I'm fat and trying to get fit. Disk brake kits are out of my price range. How about some help here huh? Are there any taller canty levers?

I used a set of onZa HO cantilever brakes that seem to have a lot of adjustment

Wow, Frameteam, that's a beautiful bike. Great paint job. I have a similar problem, though it's more cosmetic - I have canti's that fit an old MTB with 700 wheels, but I'd prefer V brakes. My main problem is I've never welded. I did some brazing a good few years ago. Are you brazing the brake lugs, or welding them?

Brazing--That's the way they were done originaly on hand made bikes.
Another bike I built from an old 28" wheeled English Roadster

I used modern V brakes front and back on it,also 28" alum rims,5speed derailer,& dino front hub gen.Paint is Deep Red over black primer.

That's a beauty. Is the 52 Claude Butler yours as well?
I'm on the lookout over here in the UK for classics. I see them occasionally, but they're fewer and fewer to be found.
I don;t know, but I'd say there's less of a vintage market over here, so when they do come up, they come up cheap, but I suspect that there simply aren;t the bikes around any more - most having gone to the dump.

It's funny really. I'm 42 now, and when I was a kid in the 70s, we'd see those kind of machines everywhere, but would never dream of riding them. We were into building up bikes that were something akin to mountainbikes today - well, we took our inspiration from dirt bikes - a 26 front wheel with nobbly tires combined with a 24 back wheel. We'd give them cow-bar handlebars, bug and wide and a rear fender right up the back. I was quite adept at brazing the rear brake lug lower for the smaller back wheel, but like I said, that was all a long time ago.
Such a shame to think of all those bikes that to my eyes now seem so beautiful all gone to the dump, crushed up and burried somewhere.
Oh well. It's good to see someone salvaging them and doing such a fine job of bringing them into the modern world.

Hey frameteam2003: I would love to know how to add canti bosses. I have an old rockhopper that *badly* needs canti's in the back. It has a u-brake which STINKS. I can figure out the brazing part, but its the positioning etc. Do you use a jig to hold them in place? I could really use some ideas. Thanks alot

Yes I used a Jig to hold them to the frame in the correct spot while brazing.Sounds complicated doesn't it---the jig is only two pieces of flat stock with simple holds drilled in it and a bolt.Take two flat stock pieces wider than the frame/or fork.Drill a hole through the center of both.Next drill a second hole in the top piece(I did it to the left) --- this hole is to bolt the canty boss in---then to the right of center drill a couple of close holes and cut them together so you end up with a slot.Take the top flat stock with both bosses bolted in,possion bosses to frame using slot to adjust the width,bolt the bottom flat stock to clamp the two halfs to the frame and braze.Only real trick is to take your time,measure(for the rim) and get them stright(with the frame)It's lot easer to unbolt and adjust several times than to file off a mistake.---sam

O yea,the 52 claud butler I got as a frame only($20) from Bruce Robbins in the UK.Also the Russ tandem from Mick Butler in London,the Fothergill (of liverpool)I got in the states.
