no chain here, tallbikes

A design inspired from a random photo spotted in passing on this forum https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...=101641&page=2 (well done guys) just had to be built and taken to a tall bike conventon.

She's not quite finished yet;

Can anyone get their head around trying to mount this machine on the fly??? tis not easy and any ideas on said subject would be greatly appreciated, (ie: its a long reach between handle bars and ground). Gathering enough rolling momentum to climb the backbone and get a bum on the saddle is the mission so lets hear them ideas folk and free me from lamp post and tree climbing, its such an undignified way to be mounting such a majestic velocipede.

Who thought junk could be so beautiful, by far my fav tall bike ride.

If you had the same kind of unicycle crank arrangement on at least one side of the other two front wheels you could ride and/or climb up that way. Stagger them 90 degrees from each other or something.*

Hey, nice hat!

*note, I would probably sterilize myself trying to mount your fine contraption this or any other way

ah, yes, the "threepenny farthing". But why not use 4 wheels?

Perhaps you could mount it the way a giraffe is freemounted: One step on the wheel to stop it, another on the next wheel to stop it (they use a special lever that steps on the bottom wheel), then into the saddle.

Cause you'd have to pedal backwards, not that there's anything wrong with that...

Mount it like any Penny Farthing. Put a peg on the backbone, sticking out the left side, up as high as you can reach. You put your left foot on the peg, push a couple of times with your right foot to gain momentum, then coasting a few feet, step up on the peg and continue the up motion (maybe a bit of hop needed for your bike) landing your butt on the seat. Pedal away.
You could put a right side peg between the left side peg and the seat, making it a two step ladder.
Report back how it goes.

triple penny dilemma

Mount it like any Penny Farthing.
with a penny farthing, you can reach both handlebars to steer as you mount. the 3 penny handlebars are far out of reach... so how do you stop the front end jacknifing as you kick off and scurry up the backbone?

Make a two-position brace to keep the wheel from turning? And once you get up you could disengage it. I suppose it might be a problem if it becomes engaged mid-ride, but then again, you're on a tall bike.. what isn't a problem? Just a weird idea.

That's what the wink was for. The backwards-pedaling "bonnie'n'clydes" are a pain in the patoot.

"Wooooow" how delighted am I..... big thanks from a little kiwi 2 all you international bright young things out there, just lov'en those ideas...... put the biggest smile on the ol dial, thats for shore,

The tricky part is this... it turns out that when triple penny is standing still and one trys to climb him he has a tendancy to capsize rather specutuarly, for yon brave climbing would be rider, not good.

Momentum is proving to be the key and foward motion ones only friend.

'Maximuss' im digging the polevolt idea, wild bro! 'Lockups' there will be further investigations into your unicycle peddle on each crank idea, the duck smells potentel. Not so sure on the brace 'Boss' means more of that standing still?

'Sir JP', an honour. those 4 words man...."why not try four" Yee/Haa bro and bless your lucky ducks I like ya styes...do you know what u have planted? (thats one of your oz rats in back ground of second photo)

'Elares' the pennyfarthing backbone mount is golden and momentum and rider friendly but those handle bar are a mighty long way away.

peddle on, the revolution is coming oil suckers

I have to say...

One of the really cool things about 3penny for mine is the fact that it's possible (we proved it) to ride a pixie tall clear underneath this beast while moving... niiiiiice! I give that the big thumbs-up. Go the Mudbutt n' Gravox combo

grumpy-bum

that's a pretty frown!

the two on the tallest bikes are wearing helmets, and everyone was wearing helmets while riding to the event together.
fancy when you leave public roads, it's quite legal to be helmetless here.
