The Varsity Cruiser in action

Working on the Varsity Cruiser again. I bought a poor condition '64 Schwinn Varsity to sell off some parts. The frame was my size, so I fitted a set of nice alloy coaster brake rims that I'd bought because they were cheap & pretty. The rear rack is birch plywood inlayed with mahogany. The bottle holder is a section of giant bamboo mounted to the front reflector mount. Bars are from an old mountain bike wrapped with cork bar tape.

Bike works surprisingly well. Rode it about 20 miles on the Fourth. This is a bike that's meant to be ridden, not a show piece. It's a mild custom- going for a vintage surf theme.

Next on the list is to improve the looks of the bottle holder & add lighting front & rear. The rear light will be based on the lens from a '59 VW Bug. Undecided about the front. Might work up a chainguard of sorts. Since this is a rare survivor with mounts for downtube shifters, I don't want to make any mods to the frame itself.

Any comments or input will be welcomed.

For July 4th riding, you were averaging 0.25 MPH? LOL, looks great. I used to take my varsity of jumps n stuff, tough as nails, especially the forks. Ended up bending the rear triangles though.

How 'bout a Varsity Townie? All done up for the 4th of July? This was for a club breakfast ride, but we actually encountered a parade along the way.

Did you say you encountered a parade or started a parade?

Here's a picture of two other Varsitys at the parade.

Yeah. It was three years ago on the 4th. Our breakfast ride crashed a parade. We just filtered into it and rode with them a few blocks, then continued our ride. Luckily the club jersey is red, white & blue.
