Convert mountain bike to a single speed
I have an old jamis durango 27 speed with disc brakes and want to convert it to a single speed. Is this possible? What all would be involved?

You can get an SS conversion kit for the rear wheel, will need to singulate the front crank or buy a purpose built single, and get a tensioner for the chain... old road derailleurs (short cage) are my favourite chain tensioner

Or just sell the Jamis and get a single speed. Newer SS bikes are nice, light and fast. I'm fond of the Trek Pure S myself, would add one to the stable it I could afford it.

I have started dismantling my old Jamis tonight. Any good web sites to buy used chain ring and rear sprocket? Chain and spacers?

plenty of 135 wide single speed hubs to build a wheel around.
Ive used an old freewheel hub wheel, dumpster rescue , re spacer-ed the axle , took the 5 speed dish out, put a single freewheel on it .. done..
buggered with the 1 chainring up front to get a reasonable chain line .. cost was mostly the $20 for the freewheel .. a Bit more for a New Chain.
