Trying to get back into riding in MN after many years.

Gave up riding 20+ years ago when life took over. I've been riding a cheap box store MTB that I bought on a whim when my 5 year old asked to participate in a family bike ride at a camp. It has served is purpose for the past 7 years, and he has now taken it from me (how time goes by!). He loves riding and has asked for us to do more rides together, so with a motivated and athletic riding partner I'm setting out to begin riding again. I'm also somewhat motivated by the knee problems that are beginning to show following years of running.

I joined the forum a week or two ago as I began researching current styles, options, and technology. I have visited a few local bike shops, ridden a fair amount of bikes, and narrowing the list to a couple options.

I hope to make a decision soon, but the budget was not planning for this, so I may have to drag my feet a little with the summer almost over and a long winter ahead.

Looking forward to reading the information here.

Welcome to Bike Forums. If you find some extra cash, take your son with you to the bike shop and get an entry level bike for him and one for yourself.

Riding with your son is fun. Mine is 44 years old and I still enjoy riding with him.

Well I finally decided on a bike after many test rides, a 2015 Felt V90F that the LBS gave me a nice end of season price on, and this excited my son. He decided it was time for a nicer bike and ordered a 2016 Giant Escape 2 last night. He had been saving, and I agreed to pay the difference to upgrade from the 3 to the 2. He is very excited to get out riding more. I hesitated allowing him to spend this much at 12 years old, but this last time we stopped into the LBS he tested a large frame, and though it barely fit, he was comfortable on it and it seemed the better choice. Hopefully this will last him many years, and I hope that since his hard earned money went into it, he will take care of it.

That is what I am looking forward to. I already coach one of his teams, and the time together is priceless. Now to fuel the passion in my daughter as well.

Besides the blessing of a son who wants to ride, you're coming back to biking when MN offers many more options for nice rides: lots to good trails and the urban bike infrastructure is starting to shape up too. Enjoy your new bikes!
