Chains compatibility Shimano vs KMC
Hello,
I have a FC-TX71 Crankset and a 7 speed Cassette sproket CS-HG30. Both are Shimano.
I need to buy a new chain. I found a Chart with the recommended chain for both, Crankset and Cassette combination.
The recommended chain for my bicycle is (as the article says): CN-HG50 (Shimano).
My question is:
Are Shimano CN-HG50 and KMC Z50 the same chain?
Thanks in advance,
German.-

Any chain that is recommended for 7 and 8-speed cassette use will work with your bike. What you may find is a new chain, any brand, will skip if you use it with your existing cassette if the cogs are worn. You may need to replace the casette too.

Maybe KMC does make Shimano. I do know that KMC chain is the worst stuff I've used on a bike in years. Not so much from wear but breaking at the pins. I can count on about 1000km on a KMC whereas a good quality SRAM, Shimano, etc. will last me for many thousands.
Funny thing is, if I know it's a KMC chain, I don't look after it as well because I know it won't last...can anyone spell self fullfilling prophecy?

gotta love kmc chains. the right price point. after the $20 price point you're paying for the name and for different shinier looks. in other words, you're a sucker.

I've used thousands of KMC chains on SS beach crusisers with minimal failure.

The KMC 8spd on my bent is up to 12k miles with about 1/16" stretch. The 9spd KMC lasted about 5k miles. The KMC 10spd I recently bought for the compact conversion was made in China and used one time use QR links. It will be several years before endurance can be estimated.
