Peace

I was cruising home today. I had no thought of hurrying. I always felt and acted confidently as if I belonged on the street.

I do.

What is more in sync with nature than a quiet, human-powered vehicle?

I tell you, motorists are missing so much!

That's why I have never once regretted getting rid of my last car, in 1982. Not once.

I'm grateful for the occasional ride in a friend's car and glad there are emergency vehicles, but so much of motor traffic is unnecessary, wasteful, and isolating. And look at the awful parking lots where once there were houses and trees. That can't be called an improvement in any way.

Habitual motorists not only miss a lot, they participate in much destruction, whether they know it or not.

... And that's why I have NEVER owned or driven a car in my life.

On a bike I always seem to be happy where I am, going the speed I am, enjoying the moment. When I get back in a car ( a pretty rare event these days), I can't help reverting to driver mode, where I always need to be going faster and somewhere else. I try to resist these priimal urges, and mellow out a bit.

You know, I don't think I'd ever thought about it before now, but I almost never wish I were already at my destination when I'm riding my bike. I may be uncomfortable for some reason, such as the heat or heartburn or something, but somehow I'm always just intent on cycling, and content with cycling. When I drove a car, I think I was always wishing the trip were over with as soon as it started!
