Fangio frame

I've recently picked up one of these.

Badged as Fangio, Columbus tubing, chromed forks, prob late 70's early 80's. Not a brand I know anything about.

Anyone have any info on Fangio Bicycles??

The only Fangio I'm familiar with is an Argentine Forumula 1 racer, won a lot of championships in the 1950s. His parents were Italian.

...then I found this recent sale on British e-bay

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...category=72573

.. then I found this remote connection on the Columbus (tubing) web site:

In 1950 A.L. Colombo became a joint-stock company and Colombo’s son, Gilberto, joined the company. He began designing car chassis, setting up the company Gilco whose customers include Ferrari, Maserati and Lancia. Fangio, Ascari and Villoresi therefore raced in cars with Colombo chassis. The passion for cycling throughout this context remained alive and strong. It was Angelo’s youngest son, Antonio, however, who made a simple mark, Columbus, into the leading company for the production of tubes for top-of-the-range frames.

Hi

Thanks for your time - the one in the pic is the one I bought! Seized stem and seatpost which thankfully I've managed to get out with no damage. Quite liked the frame which is why I bought it, but know nothing of the manufacturer. Has various made in Italy stickers etc on it.

There was a Belgian cycling team called Fangio back in the late 70's early 80's. They normally raced Kermesses, but got rides in the Belgian classics. Dunno what the sponsor was, though I can't remember them riding 'Fangio' branded bikes. They generally rode Alans.

Five of them, to be exact - the last when he was 45 years old in 1957. I saw him race in the Gran Premio d'Italia that year.

A great story about this great man occurred in the early 1990's, shortly before he died. A writer went to Buenos Aires for an interview with him, and they went out to dinner. As they entered the restaurant, everyone inside stood and applauded him. That was over 35 years after he had retired!

One of two autographs I ever went after was his. I still have it.

Classic1 is right; there used to be a (Belgian) proteam riding Fangio-branded bikes with Alan frames (mid 80’s though). Main sponsor ‘Marc’ (soaps) – sorry, only found this pathetic small pic.
Apart from that, there is a small shopbrand with the same name and their bikes (I’ve seen Columbus as well as Reynolds-frame ones) show up from time to time on the local 2ndhand market. Not sure there’s a relation between the 2 ‘Fangio’ brands …
