Road warrior spotted
A road warrior passed me on my way to work this morning.
Since I was behind schedule, trying to shave a little time off my ride, I thought, "What the heck, let's see if I can narrow the gap a little." Me with my 25 pound bike, added weight from rack, u-lock and cable, change of clothes, shoes, food, etc. Aw, who cares? Let's go for it!
To be honest about this, I didn't have much of a chance. But overall, I was very pleased with how I caught up with him and (it seems) wouldn't let him go (for a little while.) But I probably couldn't have stayed with him for too much longer, but then again, I will never know, because we parted ways about 5 miles from work.
But it was fun. He helped me get to work a little faster, and I helped him push his training a little. Then again, maybe he was getting ready to dump me.
All in fun!

I bet that was fun! At one point, while I was riding at RAGBRAI, a pace line of the "A" riders from our team went smoking by me. I pushed harder on the pedals, but it was obvious that there was no way I could ever catch them, much less keep up with them! A short time later, another rider from the team came up to me, and he told me that he could not keep up their pace, either. We rode along for a while, and he said that tomorrow, he was going to ride at a nice relaxed pace like I was, and enjoy himself! Little did he know that I was working my butt off to do what I was doing!
Oh well, I sure had fun, and as you point out, Pete, it is "All in fun!"

Every lane is a bike lane
Yeah, it's fun to test yourself against those dudes. I think it's even more fun if you manage to 'drop' someone on a more spanky bike than yours. That's really cool.

That was one of the fun things about RAGBRAI, I smoked a lot of bikes that were a lot fancier than my trusty old Roubaix. (And we were in turn passed by some of those same brands!!) Hmmm, you suppose those other souls who were struggling along thought of me as a road warrior? I sure don't, but I guess perception has a lot to do with your point of view! (Like if you are walking up a hill, or riding!)
It is fun to test yourself, and actually you get faster when you try to keep up with an "A" rider...maybe not right away, but it will come!
