Carbon Fibre Fork Failure

My friend experienced a bad crash when the carbon fibre forks on his two year old Giant OCR2 collapsed. It appears that the adhesive joining the right hand carbon fibre fork blade to the alluminium top section failed causing it to pull out of the joint which caused all the weight being transferred to the left hand side fork blade which consequently tore apart and the whole assembly collapsed.

Has any one else experienced this problem.

Regards, Reg Hanson.

Carbon Fibre Fork Failure

Thanks mate.

Where are you located. I am in Perth, Western Australia.

I have not yet contacted Giant but my bike shop owner says that he has never heard of the problem before. I suppose that answer would be expected though from a guy who sells carbon fibre forked bikes. I will get on to Giant locally as soon as possible.

Regards, Reg

I'm in california (usa).. it could well be a defect on that particular fork as well. Just might be unlucky... scary, hope your friend is ok.

Carbon Fibre Front Fork Failure

Thanks again. My friend is reasonably ok. Fractured collarbone, lacerations and bruises all over. Scary yes, since my road bike (a Giant 2007 OCR3)is similar arrangement

Glad to hear your friend is "reasonably" OK. I ride a steel frame bike with a carbon fork, and as a Clyde, I worry about this all the time.

Welcome to the forum!

PICS!

I had a front wheel pop off when I was 19. Knocked me clean unconscious. I apparently didn't get a concussion because I broke the fall with my face.

The recall was on 2001 model Giants.
The only carbon fork failure, I have seen, was caused by a loose QR. The wheel cocked out of one drop out, while turning, and the other leg took all the load at an angle breaking the leg off. The safety tabs had been trimmed off of the fork.

The safety tabs wouldn't have helped anyways...?

They would have allowed the wheel to clunk around but not come off. Same as in my situation, only they didn't exist at the time; the drops were just smooth.

Bad crash = Broken bike parts? If you crash your Chevy into a pole does GM pay for the parts under warranty?

Those who don't appreciate the hours going into making a good steel fork crown get what they deserve...

depends on if the wheels fell off BEFORE hitting the pole, or AFTER.
