Finally got off-road
After commuting since January on my poprad non-disc, I finally got a chance to hit some trails today.
I swapped back to the stock wheels and tires, and took off the rack and fenders, it only took 10 minutes or so.
I went rifding on the Walnut Creek trails, really more mountain bike terrain than cyclocross. I got a few comments from people, mostly positive. They were stoked to see a cyclocross bike out on the trails.
Damn, was it fun. The bike handled beautifully and was an absolute joy on the single track. Some of the rocky parts were a liuttle jolting, but not too bad. Also, I was tentative on some of the downhills, especially if there were shelf dropoffs in excess of a foot or so.
Overall, it was a blast. Now I'd love to try a true cyclocross course.
All this when I was just looking for a fun, fast commuter.

Good for you! Most times I have one of the cross bikes on single track I am met by good bit of praise or at least intrigue. Pretty fun!

My second serious ride on my new cross bike a couple months ago was with a group of mountain bikers from work. I kept up no problem with them (albiet I took a pretty serious spill, but otherwise was fine).
I think the best part about a cross bike on mountain trails is the looks you get from people who don't know what a cross bike is. They look at you like you're some moron on a 10-speed - its great!
