Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's your budget? And what do you want to get out of cycling?

So far, this seems more like a general cycling question rather than a road cycling one.

You want to do road cycling? You need cash. Lots of it. Just the way it is.

+1.
If you're looking to do a lot of miles and hard riding, don't expect miracles from that GMC. It should do you alright for basic exercise and transportation though.

I think you should just ride what you've got and try to save at least 500. I got great bike for 450 and then realized that a bike is just the tip of the iceberg as far a what’s needed. I would have to say that if you really want to get into road cycling you need at least 1000 minimum. If you just want to have a road bike for fitness and leisurely riding you could get away with the Denali.

Not true. If you want to be a competitive racer sure, but road cycling, no. You can get away with a bike that's a few hundred dollars. It doesn't have to be about being the flashiest, fastest or most pretentious out there. It's about riding a bicycle.
