Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trek 1000 Alpha Series road bike - is $250 good

I am interested in purchasing my first road bike. I have found a 2001 Trek 1000 Alpha Series for $250. The bike has been in storage. It has a custom aluminum 54 cm frame. Installed cyclo-computer ?? and Shimano clipless pedals. Is this a good bike to start?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If it's your size and is in good condition, sure. How tall are you and what's your inseam?

Well, if you don't know the basic of fixing a bike, you might consider asking if you can take it to an LBS to have them check it out. Then again, for $250, it's kind of hard to make a bad decision...

For $250 how can you go wrong? Lots of us pay more than that in shipping fees in a season.

I bought a virtually unused version of that same bike that was a 2000 for 350 and I thought I got a great deal. Same size too. I say go for it, although the red, white and blue is less cool than the yellow, IMO. Crassic has the 2000 version as well and he seemed to like it.

Sora isn't all that bad, really.
