Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Isaac Impulse/09 Rival

Here is my Isaac Impulse/Rival 2009 build. Built it up as economically as possible but don't feel I compromised any performance and definitely no weight penalty as compared to my past Dura Ace builds. This bike complete comes in at 16lbs (3 ounces) with relatively heavy wheelset (Real Designs) that I pirated off another bike.

The Ritchey White bars and stem are rare as is this frame and I prefer the subdued graphics. Isaac doesn't even have a dealer in my state. Haven't gotten it out yet on the road, but with that BB, it is gonna be snappy to say the least. I have built up more expensive bikes, but this one is the most sophisticated and appealing looking to me. This and Parlee were on my short list, but I had to pull the trigger on this frame at the price I got it.

I wish the best of luck to the guys at the shop that built it up for me. Doesn't look like they will surivive which is a shame because it was the nicest shop I ever been in. Good luck to those guys, hope they land on their feet.

hot look'n bike.
Just a little fyi, Isaac has recalled all bikes made since 2004 (I believe all they do is change the plug in the fork to a longer one)

very nice! and very light considering it's a Rival build with non-lightweight wheels.

Yeah thanks,
I waited for the newer expander before I built it which delayed the process. Plus I had to wait for the white stem and bars which were out of stock for a month. The "recall" was to cover themselves. They only wanted to have shops check for poor installations of forks with too many spacers or particular types of stems that caused stress points on steerer. (ie. ones with cut outs).
You'd be surprised at how many people don't follow manufacturers guidelines with these lightweight carbon steerers. The 5mm spacer on top is important on most forks but a lot of people don't do it.

I anticipated around 16lbs. This frame is pretty light (under 1000 grams) and 09 Rival is lighter than my Dura Ace 7800 and only 100 grams more than the new 7900. There were recent threads where I posted links to weights. Dura Ace 7900 is 100 grams lighter but almost $2000 more than what I paid for Rival group. Never again will I pay that much if weight difference is so minimal.

Sram Red IMO is the only upgrade worth the $ for the weight savings. And that can be had for a lot less than Dura Ace 7900. Probably no performance benefit over 09 Rival, but 270 grams lighter makes it more justifiable.

Hot, I love Isaac bikes. I've always wanted one, maybe someday I'll be able to get one.

Thanks, I always wanted a completley black bike. I also like bare titanium as well but that is just the aesthetic that I like.

Love the bike. I like the handlebar/stem combo, I am trying to make myself not spend the cash on a stem like that.

Yeah, the Ritchey White is nice stuff. I figured I would go with this combo in white and black bar tape. If I went with traditional black bar and stem I would have been tempted to put white bar tape which gets filthy fast. I dig how stealthy it looks

Came out very niiice. Good call on the white bar and stem- it's just too bad you have to put tape over it, right? Black/ White is simple and understated, yet hot at the same time.

Hey RS, got my message I guess. Thanks, it came out like I thought. Real simple but sophisticated. Won't ever get dated looking. Not that this is my last bike as you know. LOL Last one for a while at least.

09 Rival is probably the best value out there. Sram advertises it as 2149 grams. Not sure if they include the cables or not but either way it is light. Entry or no entry level, it works as well as my Dura Ace 7800 and is lighter and cheaper. No brainer for me.

Another link to review where Rival is quoted at 2149 grams. I guess there can be variations in one set from another, but 75 grams seems a little high but I guess it is possible. End result is what the scale says.
I can save a lot of weight in the cassette and if I upgrade and wheels and I am down in the 15's lbs.

https://www.roadbikeaction.com/fly.as...id=65&cid=1101

I am happy with this complete build for about what the frame retails for usually. Under $3k for what you see but wheels were pirated from another bike. Maybe these would look cool on my Isaac********************?? They are white.
