Raleigh USA Pro Frame - Campgnolo Drop Outs - Worth Saving?
Hi All,
I have been holding onto this frame for years and today decided that I may want to part with it. Its a Raleigh USA frame (Pro?) and one that I have not seen a similar paint job for. Can anyone reference this EXACT frame? The frame is light and has Campagnolo drop-outs.
Here's the stinker, as its been in the garage for years I either never noticed or it happened over the years, there is a small puncture wound on the framing that goes under the seat (see pic) - does this kill the frame?
Thanks all...

Interesting; never seen that serial system before; though I must confess to being unfamiliar with the Derby-era of Raleigh (and, of course, this frame doesn't fall under the US-made Kent serials of the Derby era). Far as I know, other than the Team Professional, these red/yellow Team replicas were the only other steel frames available in the lineup (the previous steel models having been converted to Techniums in 1987).
This isn't an SBDU frame, but a very nice piece at any rate. I'll put an educated guess that it's some sort of Team Pro replica. Given the serial system, either an '87 (if the system is supposed to read 8710680 for the year) or an '88 (if 8710680 stands for the year).
Not sure if anyone has the '87 U.S. catalog for Raleigh; latest I have is '86.

Does that just look like an issue with the brass around the seat stay caps? Maybe a frame builder could repair that?

I wouldn't damage the original paint just to have that filled with brass or silver. Sell it as-is (after all, there are buyers out there like me, who understand that this blemish isn't a structural nightmare), or stick some Bondo in the gap and touch it up.

Thats what I was thinking, that it was probably like this since it was new.

My brother owned - and sold - that same frame. I want to say it was a Competition. I think one popped up here before, too.

nice looking frame, I love the bike stand! I never thought of putting carpet on mine to protect the bikes.

Thanks for all the input. I am going to sell it on the "For Sale" forum as I dont have the $ to rebuild it and the wife wants some of my treasures outta here. Sounds like the frame issue is not that big of a deal too -
Any idea of a fair price to add with taking into consideration the slight damage.
I do tend to collect so I have to control myself
Thank you all so much!

It's definitely not a Team Pro. Serial numbering is wrong, as are the frame details (domed dropout stay junction would never have been used on a Team Pro, for starters).

My hunch is that it's a high-mid level frame (but not Pro level) circa 1987 - maybe a Grand Prix in Team colors. My sense is that a top-level frame would have a bit nicer dropout treatment and a front deraileur braze-on.
I believe that SN scheme has been accounted for here on BF previously.

I think I'd just brush off any loose rust, use a little OA or vinegar to dissolve any that remains, and then seal it up with nail polish or linseed oil or something to prevent rust from returning.

On the contrary; it is much more common on Schwinn Paramounts.
Red, maroon and yellow? That fits the description of a 1986 Prestige. Could you post a photo?

I was told they were team frames, from the guy selling it who had 6 or 8, used... I just picked the one in my size.
Actually, looks just like the 753 one you posted, but black is maroon and decals are yellow. No number hanger though.

OK. Still a nice riding bike. Yes, you seem to be right:

I got mine as a frame, so I built it all NR, except headset because fork cut for Shimano.

Whoops - forgot I had the catalog for it too. A very nice machine indeed; pretty much a 531 Team Replica with a different paint job. The 1986 Prestige was produced in England; 1985/4 versions were essentially black/chrome, Japanese-made Competitions.

It was my main bike for 3-4 years: I had retired my '84 Cinelli because it was one of the few new bikes I ever had in my life, but eventually said what the heck. I should pull that Raleigh out again...
