I can't remember who it was, but I think one of the winners in the Pyrenees this Tour was quoted on cyclingnews.com as saying he was glad he told his mechanic to fit a compact crankset for the days stage.

(But if Tiger is correct about cyclingnews.com then maybe he was paid to say that )

Don't know who that is but I'm pretty sure Der Kaiser pulled the same move just before last year's Tour

First photo is Phinney.

2nd is Hampsten, Alcala, Winnen, some bloke from Reynolds I can't recognise and Pedro Delgado at the back of the group.

OK I'm bored with the usual "who's going to win tonight stage" crapola. Let's get into something more interesting like "What's the highest ranked rider on GC to crack the worst on Col de Joux-Plane?"

I'm going for Dessel to finally crumble tonight. Little bugger's been hangin in there beyond all expectations, although I don't think anyone's going to capitulate like Pink did last night.

He certainly looked nice and smooth in his pedalling. It would probably make sense for a stage like that to go the compact. Unless you are der Kaiser of course, pushing "a massive gear up the hills!" as Mr. Liggett liked to say.

Michel Zanoli - proof that stupidity and mental illness are no hinderance to being a good bike rider.
