Yep, that's the one.

Ahh, the Dog. A pub at the end of my steet (at the time) with a plentiful supply of handies from the local private schools....choice venue:D And then stagger off to the Harp after stumps at the Dog coz it had a 3am licence.

I heard about the first one but missed it. Bugger

Came up through the juniors with Sharpy. Haven't seen him in years. Prick flicked me for fourth in a Vic Junior road title one year. Had a bloody good sprint on him.

I remember that place... our guitarist was trying to get us a residency there late 80's early 90's cos it was near his house. Didn't happen.

Massivley cool dude and pantsman extraordinaire. Was like a god to us young blokes at Blackburn along with guys like Peter Ashton and David Loakes.

Yep...knew how to win.

classic1 01-02-07 09:39 PM

lol. Sharpey was a bloody menace and weapon with the shielas, even as a 15yo. Went to see George Thorogood with a mate and Sharpey once when we were kids. Dickhead me wore a lemon coloured t-shirt and was worried all the bikies would kick the sht out of me.

Knew Loakes and Ashton but not very well. Both were good sprinters, Loakesy could race MTB well too. Peter Ashton is a nice bloke. He told me a funny story once about riding the Dubbo wheelrace with Loakesy. They won everything after having camped on the river bank the night before with all the local brothers.

Its looks like its all over for Australias most overrated sportsmen. Now if only Tamsin Lewis would retire....

Rode the Hell Ride one day on an MTB after we dared him....spent the whole morning spinning away in 46x12 looking like he was sitting on a dunny. Bloody hilarious.

Ashton won the Melb to Ballarat one year after about 5 minutes coaching from Iffy...he could've been great if he cared.

Jono stacked badly and looks he might have broken his wrist (needs another x-ray in a week to confirm) as well as snapping his handlebars and destroying his front rim beyond repair.

just another day at the races....:(

Those support races are carnage....guys go in wanked up that they've got a big audience and forget how to race. Plus the courses are usually unfamiliar and pretty technical for lads used to riding crits in a square.

classic1 01-03-07 04:40 PM

Plus there were 130 starters. Too many on some of the circuits they are using IMO.

matagi 01-03-07 04:48 PM

Did anyone actually go and watch?

And ..... any of you doing Amy's Ride on Sunday?

Dunno. Cycle Victoria wouldn't want to knock back the entry monies probably - its all revenue for them. I know the promoter well. Might ask what the story is when I next see him.

That reminds me, Loakesy had the very first Ti bike I ever saw. Very chic in 88-89 or whenever it was.:)

he also had the first set of C-Record delta brakes I'd seen outside of a magazine.

Droolworthy.

Why isnt it all brought together on the same weekend in carnival type format? My guess is there isnt enough political slight of hand to get the sport where it needs to be. Cycling needs a heavy hitter in the political spectrum. Im speaking from a position of extreme ignorance here so enlighten me :)

The sport needs to be shoved down the mainstream markets throat.....not this pie in the sky periphery BS.

You're right. The promotion of the sport has been severely lacking for ever and a day. I can remember an Aussie title in the early 90's being held at friggin Cockatoo. No one knew it was on. I recall that a respected local sports writer/commentator from Gippsland - Tony Osler - absolutely bagged them about it. It was in his backyard and he didn't even know until after the event. Road cycling came within a whisker of being kicked off the roads in NSW by the Police. It was only the invervention of a former NSW minister who was a huge cycling fan throwing weight around that got it resolved.

If Oz is anything like NZ, the Nationals are probably held in different areas on a rotating basis, with individual clubs putting forward hosting proposals.

Here in sheep shagger central, it's rotates between the North and South islands, and it's an age since they were held anywhere bigger than Palmerston North (city of maybe 120,000.) Three years ago they were held on the S.I west coast, and most competitors had to drive 5 hours from Christchurch as the planes that fly in there were too small to take many bikes as luggage.

classic1 01-03-07 06:14 PM

Bit different out here Vette. Used to be like that when there were different Pro and Amateur federations. The Nats are now awarded to promoters (rather than clubs or state federations) on a contract over several years.

The course needs to be selective to make it a good race. Beach road would be logisitcally difficult and end up as a bunch sprint. I'm not sure it needs to be held in a capital city, but a major centre with easy access (eg Geelong) would make sense.

62vette 01-03-07 06:42 PM

BikeNZ has finally twigged to the pro calendar and is holding the elite and U23 nationals in January instead of September with the rest of the classifications so that the pro riders who would otherwise be busy racing for their teams can race for the national title.

So this year the big hitters like Julian Dean and Greg Henderson will be competing.

It would be nice to see a NZ jersey in the pro peleton for once.
