Wheel size 700c same as a 29er?
Are 700c road bike wheels the same size as the 29 inch mountain bike wheels? Are they interchangeable if running disc brakes?
Thanks |
So far as I can say, yes. I replaced the OEM Weinmann wheels on my CX bike with WTB Frequency i19s (MTB wheels) and in turn replaced those with Crank Brothers Iodine 3s (also dedicated MTB wheels.) I've never mounted MTB tires to any of them.

Generally, usually, the hubs are 130 mm OLD on road, 135 mm on mountain. The rims are 622 mm bead seat diameter in both.
|
The rims are interchangeable, but seldom the hubs. Different axle lengths, like 130mm road vs 135mm (old) MTB. Different axle types, thru axle vs skewer. Both road and mountain change "standards" so much these days, it is a complex question. You could probably swap tires, but wheels, well... don't count on it.

Can I put 700x38 gravel tires on my 29" mtb? Just swap the tires, not rims
|
You can certainly try ..
just realize there are minor variations of the BSD in rims & tires, so some combinations fit tighter/looser than others Although I Wouldn't put a tire on a rim that is wider than the tire.. |

Yes. I have a pair of Ritchey Shield 700x38s on WTB Frequency i19s. Works just fine. Currently running 700x32s on 23mm wide MTB wheels. No problems. |

I'm guessing yes, but I clicked on this thread to find out info myself. I got a 29er mountain bike at the flea market this weekend and the tires say 29x2.00 (I think that's the width. didn't go out to make sure before I typed this), then in parenthesis it has 700x50. |

The x 2.00 and x 50 mean the same thing as well. 2.00 inches wide is the same as 50mms wide. |
FYI, a few months ago I replaced the 20z2 knobby tires with 700x38 hybrid style road tires. Straight forward install and no issues after about 400 miles. I was amazed at how much faster the bike rides now
