Just picked up a new Firmstrong Urban Man off of Amazon. It's a very nice cruiser, especially for the price. :thumb:

It's a Rockshox Toro, a decent quality entry level mtb fork, because the Suede uses a mountain bike size 1 1/8 steerer instead of the usual 1", I was able to get the threaded steerer top cut off the factory fork and welded onto the Toro so I could keep the factory quill stem...putting a threadless stem on would have looked out of plce IMO...

Solid cruiser for 2 bills, had one before.

I actually got it for $135 shipped. I had in in my cart on Amazon and it kept dropping. The matte black one actually got down to $125 and change shipped. I tried to get them to price match the $10 difference that I paid a day earlier but apparently they changed their price matching policy and it had already shipped. No biggie, I'm very happy with it. :D

I've been looking at the Kent LaJolla (LaHOYa) at Wallyworld.
Pros: fairly decent aluminum frame, nice welds, fairly high bottom bracket, good steering geometry, European bottom bracket, KT coaster brake hub.
Cons: crap headset, crappy bottom bracket bearings and cups, crappy steel front hub, steel cranks.

This I can work with. I'd probably ride it as is and then eventually throw a fixie crank and bottom bracket into it.
Then I would probably upgrade the front hub to something sealed bearing. I've got a White Industries front hub that would work. Upgrade the seatpost when the right size came up on the List of Craig, maybe seat too.
Headset would be a mail order item.
Eventually I'd change the bars and neck. Craigslist item.
So pretty much another hundred dollars or so to make it decent.
Kent LaJolla at Walmart

For another 20ish bucks I'd swap out that KT with a Shimano CBE110. ;)

also if you already intend to play with it I'd grab one used. I have similar plans for mine (though at this point all I've done is add some alloy bars), but since I knew it wouldn't stay stock (and I'm a cheap skate), I waited 'til I found one at a flea market.

Ive been searching my next cruiser for 6 months now. I was going to get the giant single but I decided to get the firmstrong urban 3 speed. Im playing with the customize tool now lol. Im probably going to go with the Orange with Chrome fenders....Should have it for xmas lol..
Its going to be around 315.00 direct from firmstrong. Thats 15 bucks cheaper than the giant single simple....

As the Brits would say "Brilliant". I have been trying to think of a clean solution for this and have been coming up empty. Simple is always the best THANK YOU. It is so obvious now that you have shown me that I feel stupid.

May I link to this over at electric bike.com. There are several Electra cruiser riders that would really welcome this.......calfee

Dr Frankenstein I presume? :foo:

Lol :) while I have built a few bikes up from frames, this has been my first cruiser and my first Frankenbike (the others have been straight down the line trail bikes) and I must admit it was good fun! I did get an odd look from the owner at my LBS when I asked if a Renthal Narrow Wide chainring would work with a 7 speed chain :p

No worries mate :) glad I could help... I racked my brain for ages on the same question for both asthetic and practical reasons (I turn the bars on this bike sideways on the bike rack to get it as close to the back of the truck as possible and threadless stems are not as quick to adjust)...I was actually trying to find someone to tap a thread into the steerer when the shop suggested grafting... Just make sure the weld is done by a competent person, a weak weld on a steerer is a bad idea :p

my sister died back in the fall, and a few weeks later when I had my head on closer to right I decided to build her son a bike for Christmas.

also used a frame jig idea that worked pretty well, so I think my next cruiser project will be the coker monster. been holding off on it even though I found two. still want to lower my chances of messing it up.

Both good guesses but it's Tyler Park... just outside the tennis courts and facing Tyler Park Dr.

Nice bike! 8-)

Philphine 02-20-17 07:45 PM

stretched out one of my coker monsters

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...psuolr7acm.jpg

came out pretty good ergnomicly, feels like my 26" stretches. unpainted and some details still need to be worked out (not happy with the fork) for now it's done. I need to get a 36" rear wheel built with gears before I can finish (like cable guide decisions, rear brake options and whatnot), and I don't know when that'll be.

jpshaw 02-27-17 04:22 PM

Here is my Schwinn cruiser. Rear fender missing at the moment since, while the paint is great, the chrome is rusting out and I'm sanding and painting the fender braces black. I used a wire brush on a Dremel on the bars but they may get the same black paint treatment too.
