God I wish I know how statistical data is gathered and profiled on the internet...

Trakhak 08-15-13 04:11 PM

Interesting thread. How about a title:subtitle forum name, as is used for several of the other subforums? Something like "Cruisers: Beach bikes, [fill in other appropriate subtype names]."

Not sure this subforum will ever get much traffic, no matter what the name, though.

In this context, it's like I wanna call this forum "the Alphabet Forum", but you wanna call it "the Letter B Forum". Your preference is more limited than mine; it represents a subset of a larger category. There are many cruisers, and some of them are beach cruisers. If you limit the cruiser discussion to just beach cruisers, it's become limited. Have ppl really become this thin-skinned? Really, it's only insulting insofar as math can be insulting.

The term "beach cruiser", while popular with ppl who know little or nothing about bikes in general, holds little appeal to the cycling enthusiast, even those of us who actually dig cruisers. Even to those of us who dig beach cruisers! Because, frankly, that's a very limited sub-section of what cruisers have to offer.

Looks like someone assuming they know what I know about bikes... and the way it is said in context does make it appear to be an insult... the way it's phrased you imply I either know little or nothing about bikes in general, am highly unlikely to be a cycling enthusiast.. and even less likely to like cruisers.... all while conversing on bikeforums in the beach cruiser forum. You can't have your cake and eat it to man.

Scotty Bot 08-15-13 04:15 PM

That would be like posting "Show me your Fixy, Road Bike, and or CX" I mean they are all the same frame right? Same thing...

Depends. If we broaden the category to "cruisers" that can encompass several different kinds of bikes, as surreal has described before. For example, here is a dedicated cruiser website that is pretty lively, described as "An online community for vintage custom cruiser bicycle enthusiasts."

Most people who ride beach cruiser have active social lives outside of trolling bike forums... They are also typically tan, and good looking...
People who ride cruisers are generally fat, alcoholics, and have little to no class, and got their "cruiser" from Walmart because it came with a cup holder... Just create a new subforum...

OMG! Is that why you have so many cruisers?!?!?!

This isn't RRB and you still haven't answered my questions.

surreal 08-15-13 04:25 PM

Really? you're serious?

You've been harping on the notion that "beach cruiser" will resonate more with young ppl, folks who go to "yahoo answers" for advice on Walmart bikes, and google searches. That's what made me bring up the term's popularity with with neophytes/non-cyclists, and the simple fact is, most serious cyclists use the term "beach cruiser" in a pejorative manner.

When I generalize about ppl, it takes a bit of gumption to assume I'm insulting you. Especially given some of the things you've directed at Brennan and I in this thread. I'm just saying, I've never heard an actual cruiser person use the term "beach cruiser" to describe anything other than an actual beach cruiser. Roadies will call some of my bikes "beach cruisers" in a dismissive way, and snooty non-cyclists have called it that in a hecklish manner, but cruiser folks tend to get more specific-- even whilst they're heckling.

Brennan 08-15-13 04:40 PM

Interesting. The site owner's description in the top sticky appears to make the distinction as well, and seems to identify "cruiser" as the general category:

Welcome to the Beach Cruisers Forum

Like the sign say, welcome! If yiu love the old classic look of a cruiser or a beach bike, and love those fat balloon tires and the retro look and feel of a cruiser, then welcome to your new home. This is for everything "Cruiser". Whether you ride a classic old CCM oe Schwinn, or a JC Higgiins, or a modern beach cruiser bike, we want to make this a fun and informative source for all your needs.

1: That's a personal assumption on your part.

2: When you generalize about people, it'd be wise not refer to someone as limited and then go on to specify all the ways that someone defending the "limited" persons side of the argument would not be a cyclist on a bike site all in the same paragraph... I'm not sure how much simpler I can put it before you understand. (FYI I'm not insulted, I just find it pathetic you would do that and not man up)

3: Brennan is a troll, I don't know who's the bigger troll him or Scotty and I may have flirted with insulting you.. but I also made sure I didn't actually do it...

4: This entire argument is only because you don't like the term "Beach cruiser" as a catch all, that's a personal problem.

-I never saw the "where's the cruiser forum" thread, but it wouldn't surprise me, if it was in a non-cruiser forum, if it didn't get much traffic. TBH, I don't expect a cruiser forum on BF to ever get huge, but the term "beach cruiser" is poisonous.
-I'll ask Tom about it once we get a feeling for how most folks feel.
-"Mountain bike" is probably the most widely-used term for the pure offroad bikes, but they've been called other things (atb, trail bike...before "trail bike" took on a more specialized meaning). More importantly, "mountain bike" is not typically used as a derisive term (except for maybe on the cv forum). When I'm cruising, appreciative folks say things like "nice bike" or "i like your cruiser", while hecklers tend to refer to it as a "beach cruiser". As in, "ew, you're riding a beach cruiser." Not that I'm worried about how ppl judge my bike, but that's how the terms tend to be used.
- You mentioned the CV Forum. The fact is, the CV tribe despises cruisers. That forum needs a name-change more than this one does.
It should be called "Mid-to-high-end roadbikes from 1960-1987 and the weird rules we've applied to the accessories thereof"
, but of course that won't fly. Sad fact is, at least on BF, the terms "classic and vintage" have taken on a new, narrow meaning. In the CV world, a balloon bike from 1952 is neither classic nor vintage; it's a "beach cruiser".
- You don't know much about cruisers and cruiser culture if you think that weight, tire/wheel size, and ergos are universal on cruisers. Sure, they're mostly heavy, but a lot of folks are building cruisers that weigh half of what a beach rental does. Some folks (myself included) have built cruisers that are twice the weight of a beach rental. I've seen cruisers with 24x3" wheels out back, with 27" road wheels up front. I've seen cruisers with narrow tires front and rear. I've seen cruisers with high seats, low seats, banana seats, and every kind of handlebar ranging from apes, bmx bars, flat bars, and even drop bars. A lot of flipped northside bars on "boardtrack" builds, too.

Cruisers are pretty diverse. Beach cruisers, maybe not. Anyone who has been by a beachfront bike rental outfit already has seen all there is to see of the "beach cruiser", but cruisers run much deeper than that. Why would I, or anyone else, click on a forum called "beach cruisers" more than once? It'd only make sense if it were misnamed.

Respectfully,
Rob

PS- ppl were riding these styles of bikes on the streets and sidewalks for decades before the term "beach cruiser" was coined.

FYI.. this was your first response to me.. and definitely set the tone of how I've responded to you.

Nope. I already addressed your points and you refuse to answer my single question. Sorry, I'm not your performing monkey.

Actually.. no you've evaded my questions and seem to think you've answered them.. where's my honest answer as to why you leave out the paragraph that refuted your entire argument in the article that you yourself referenced.. better yet why were there quotations marks around a non quote? See this is the problem you don't clean it up after, and thus I brand you a troll.

Nope. Answer the question.

RaleighSport 08-15-13 04:54 PM

After you.. I asked all mine first. Oh and if by addressing my points.. you mean misquoted, left out info and evaded answering questions.. then aren't you smart.

Oh what the hell.. I don't need to sink to your level.. here's your answer, don't suppose you're going to actually answer me though.. judging by the trend you've been following.

A cruiser bicycle, also known as a beach cruiser

Also, it's easier to have the shorter name for the website button obviously.. I know which I'd choose if I had a for sale site and a premium on visible space

Scotty Bot 08-15-13 05:02 PM

Lets just broaden the topic name to "Show me your Bike".... No reason to get specific or anything, why would anyone do that? I mean you can say "Show me your _______" and people are just gonna post pictures of cats anyways...

Brennan 08-15-13 05:11 PM

Hmm...retailers too. Even the big box stores that supposedly sell "beach cruisers."

Amazon: Sports & Outdoors › Cycling › Bikes › Cruiser Bikes
REI: Cruiser Bikes
Sports Authority: Cruiser Bikes
Target: cruiser bikes
Walmart: Toys > Bikes & Riding Toys > Adult Bikes > Comfort Cruiser Bikes (note: "toys" LOL)

RaleighSport 08-15-13 05:13 PM

So.. you're telling me that all the BSO's and amazon call them cruisers.. instead of beach cruisers and you insist that I call them cruisers like you do? Think really hard about that. (You're saying you use pacific cycles lexicon)
Oh and where's my answers.. you calling a hard fact a misnomer doesn't make it true.. and that's the only one you came close to answering.

RaleighSport 08-15-13 05:19 PM

Can I make a suggestion to both of you.. and hopefully you realize this is well intended despite the attitudes and behavior both of you have displayed throughout this thread.

Go back to RRB, enjoy your "cruiser" site and accept that this sub-forum is going to be low traffic and never as specialized as you two would like it to be... unless of course you two actually work on the forum instead of attempting to caveman argue me into your way of thinking.

Surreal, if you do actually stick around may I suggest you do that write up on all the different types and what sets them apart.

Brennan if you stick around may I suggest, you quote accurately, and do not parse important information away from things simply to support a flawed argument.

Now if you gents will excuse me, my work day is over.

Siu Blue Wind 08-15-13 05:24 PM

Okay this thread is now circling the bowl. I suggest a nice ride along the beach on whatever bike will handle it.

And no, the name will stay the same.
