I'm looking to put a set of fenders on a cruiser with 26 x 2.125 tires. I'd like to put a rack over the back. The rack I have now barely clears the tire. Oh, and the bike has cantilever brakes, if it matters.

What do I need to measure to find fenders that will fit and allow me to use a rack? Is there anything I should look for with rack sizing? I use this bike to carry grocery stuff and cat litter/food so the rack has to be able to carry at least 30 pounds.. to be safe!

I was considering getting thinner tires but I'm rather liking the wide tires in the snow...

Just get the Wald 962 fenders and double rear basket. Few options are cheaper, it'll definitely fit, and the State of Kentucky desperately needs your revenue. it's typically cheaper to get 'em from somewhere other than directly from Wald.......

https://www.amazon.com/Wald-Rear-Bicy...words=wald+535 Chrome. Also available in black. The 535 is the big'n. The 520 is medium. There's a small size 20, which requires eyelets at the drop-outs, or else a kludge involving p-clips. These won't mount to fenders, but the 520 and 535 do.

You might find something cheaper, used, but these are guaranteed to fit. If you're looking elsewhere, you'll want fenders that measure @3" across to fit balloons, and the space between the legs of any rack/ rear carrier wil need to be greater than 3" to accommodate the fenders.

ps- when you're ordering the fenders, make sure you're getting 26" versions. Both the 962s and 972s come in 20", 24", and 26" varieties.

Yeah, I like the wald stuff. I've got a front basket and a rack from them that are at least 20 years old but may as well be new.

They make good stuff. I just wasn't sure everything would fit together. I know my current rack won't fit over a fender.

I don't plan on getting the double baskets till I get my second bike on the road. Baskets are a bit heavy just to ride around with! (And then I put the new rack on the second bike as my old rack is a bit too small for it, too.)

Here is the Wald fender page.
Well, it's probably heresy, but I use Topeak Explorer racks, with the spring (which holds a D-lock perfectly) and Planet Bike ATB Hardcore 60mm fenders, which are black with mudflaps.
I also install Wald 3133 QR baskets on my bikes. It's quick release & gives you a shopping basket for groceries, hardware etc......
If you don't have rear rack mounts at the top of the frame you can use "P clips" for $3/pair from your local hardware store or a Wald 5237 kit like my last one.
I use tires bigger than yours & the rear fender clears, barely. The front is no problem.

I have a front basket already... I need rear baskets. It seems I get built in ones or shoddy folding baskets.


This is the picture I took of my last shopping trip. I've ordered a mussette bag to turn into a pannier but it hasn't shown up yet. Till then I'm shaming my siblings, lol!

And, I still want baskets.

Yes, Wald's are awesome. A Wald basket came with my 1966 Schwinn tandem and it is rock solid. Other baskets on my daughters' bikes were junk. It's a beast of a basket (this size anyway) but I can't complain about the quality. I didn't know they were still in business, figured they went out with the influx of China baskets. Great to hear they're still around.

It makes the bike a bit wide sometimes, and they can rattle, but the Wald double baskets are super convenient & hold a ton of stuff. I took them off & went to a rack with a front basket. I can carry the rack, a removable trunk bag & a full repair kit & be only a few ounces heavier than the baskets were empty.
Those baskets are so easy to use though.

Good to know. The bike already tips the scales around 40 pounds unloaded so 5 more is nothing.
Easy to use is what I need. Throw in a bag with a ton of stuff and go!



I'm loving the bike with two cases of beer... heheh!

When we had a beach cottage we kept a "beer bike". It was a cantilever frame cruiser with the largest baskets Wald made front and rear. IIRC capacity was around 6 cases depending on the configuration.

Those are 12 packs of bottles from the local store 1.5 miles up the road... 3 years ago this was still a dry county.

Then get Wald rear baskets. Non-folding. Wald's basket page no longer works but it would be a 520, 535 or 570. Beware of the 535, it can come too far forward & hit your heels when you pedal. I think I use the 520 @ about $40.
I think mine is 42lbs with rear rack and bag. Rear Baskets weigh about 4lbs if I remember correctly.
Also a rear basket doesn't upset the balance the way a loaded front basket can.

Don't know if this would be of interest to you, but I make a variety of "cargo cradles" that mount on rear bike racks. You can find them on Etsy.com (just search for "cargo cradle").

Best I have seen were a set cobbled up from some 6" black corrugated drain pipe. There is a company out of Iowa that makes some really nice custom wood fenders that will fit, but a pair will probably cost more than the bike did.

I saw some bent up trombones and other band accidents that could be re-purposed into fenders, and they even have those bell shaped ends. .......or would that be too steampunk.....lol. tom
