Walk into a Bike shop lately?

\I have had a Phil Wood Freewheel hub, and now use a Bullseye hub, the limiting dimension is the hole the axle has to pass through on the freewheel

then the end is Machined down to 10mm to fit in a conventional frame dropout. in the case of Bullsye the axle os in 4 parts
a core that slips through the bearing ID and a Spacer between the cartridge bearings and over the ends ..

In the stunt BMX world there are oversized axles made for that sector ,, The half pipe Jumping set

the new thing in MTBs now is the through axle Hub. they have a Frame designed around that New design

and there are Wheel chair Hubs.. Tadpole Recumbents have a combination of using a little bit of each for their 2 front steering wheels .

DIY Machine Shop ... A tube sleeve can be turned on a lathe and then flanges left for the spoke holes to be drilled.

Common in mt biking now. 15 and 20 mm through front hubs for sus forks. Rear are now 12 mm through axles. Some more project info would be helpful.

if you haven't already, and the project involves ball bearings and races or cartridge bearings, and not bushings, i think i would start with the bearing ID i planned on using. they are an international standard and while numerous, IME, are available only a number of combinations of IDs, ODs and widths.

Half of a Cannondale Lefty hub has a huge axle diameter. I think to get a 23mm diameter axle you'll be designing and fabbing your own hub. If it's a rear with a cog set on it don't expect common cassettes or freewheels to work.

Curious why a bike project needs such a big axle, or is the project not for a bike? Andy.

You might also consider wheel chair hubs as they are bigger because the axle is supported from one side. Roger

There are two areas of concern. The ID of the largest bearing that will fit the shell, and the ID of the barrel of the hub between the flanges. Thare are hubs with large ID barrels, but many of these still only accept 35mm bearings which probably dictate a smaller axle than you wish.

Depending on the application, you may want to look at something like Sulky hubs.

In any case, more info about the needs will get you better advice about options.

+1

Lefty has a 25mm ID bearing on the disc side.

I forgot all about coaster brake hubs. I never bothered to measure but the ID is pretty large. Only problem with custom fabbing with one is that most all are angular contact loose ball bearing designs. Andy.

Thank you very much people.you all were really helpful. And it's not exactly a bicycle project but we do use bicycle part for optimization.

I have this book someone gave me written by a guy who makes custom cruisers, trikes and bents out of Walmart bikes. What he would do is drill a steel washer for spokes and weld it to a rod for an axle, then run that through pillow blocks that bolt to the frame

Still, it would help to know exactly what you're working on and why the axle needs to be so big. Lots of us have worked on non-bicycle projects over the years. This is me, 33 years ago:

The tribology of the project on wich im working on is as same of yours except for its driven by a 109cc engine installed @Rear wheel. Now i am supposed to make a direct transmission so a hub with such id is needed.

OK! I can understand the need for a beefy axle.

I hope this isn't intended to be a "road-going" vehicle. A 109cc motor can push a streamlined vehicle well past 100mph.
