Tire still okay?
1 Attachment(s)
This is a Kenda Kaliente rear tire.
I have no clue what could have caused this much rubber to peel off. The last time I really inspected the tire was about a week ago - when I was replacing the rear tire tube. I didn't see any damage like this. Now I just returned from the LBS and on the way back I decided to take a look at the rear tire. Woah! I can see the casing; the length of the "wound" is about 3 inches. Will this negatively affect traction to the extent that I don't want to use this as my rear tire? Or should I just forget about this and ride the tire until it falls apart some more? http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=441358 |
Whenever I see threads, I replace.

Ha  you did buy a new tire, right?
|
Just continue riding on it with the smashed axel.
|
Avoiding the inconvenience of a flat tire is more important to me than the price of a new tire.
|
u serious?

That tire's good for a couple thousand more miles, easy. |

No, but I have a left over Kenda Kaliente in my closet. I purchased a Rubino Pro Slick a while ago and put that on the front.

I'm still relatively new to bikes. I'm curious about the tire because I really haven't been riding it hard in the period between when it was good and when it is now showing threads. I've rode less than 100 miles before it was totally fine and now it's looking to be disintegrating. And I have less than 1000 miles total on the tires. Also, a while ago, I was doing research on my Kenda tires, and I read about people who've gashed it down to the threads and the tire didn't blow up or anything. See this picture for example: http://www.easternslopes.com/wp-cont...nted-crash.jpg |

That tire's good for a couple thousand more miles, easy. Or I guess I could use this as an excuse to get another Rubino Pro III Slick ... those things are pretty smooth. Noticeably more than the Kendas. Any other recommendations for rear tires? Looking for something that'll well as a training tire. |

I called you a troll, thinking you were just joking with this thread. I simply could not believe that anyone would seriously ask if that tire were safe to ride, so I thought it was a joke thread... the responses other folks gave you show that I am not the only one who thought that. I do not see where anyone took your question as a serious one.

I'm more concerned about the state of that TV remote. Looks infected.
|
replace and move on
|
replace. You probably could ride on it for a while, just like you could probably snip a bunch of spokes and still ride, but you are asking for problems.
|
time to replace (past its' time imo)
|
I can't believe you're seriously asking, but will assume you are.
Yes, the tire is DEAD, worn through, kaput, short, or whatever you want to call it. It appears to have plenty of miles on it and there's the last thin layer of tread delaminated from the body plies, which is pretty normal at this stage. The body plies aren't very wear resistant, and with bit of wear will fray apart like a rope that's been cut half way through, and will lose strength and blow out from the tire pressure. You might get as much as another 100 miles out of this, and the only reason to ride it is that you need to in order to get home. Replace the tire. BTW- you got sarcastic answers because the question was patently ridiculous. It's comparable to showing someone the sole of your shoe with your socks showing and asking if they were worn out. |
