Hub Help, Please!

Leaving the driveway yesterday, I heard some squeaking from the front end. Didn't think much of it, maybe a disc brake rub or something. About 20 miles from home (naturally) the occasional squeak turned into clicking/banging, not only loud, but I could feel it travel up th e fork to my hands! Sounded so loud I checked for broken spokes flopping around. Determined it was the hub....rode it home anyway, not much choice.

Bike: 2011 Trek 3900 Disc - Suspension fork replaced with Soma rigid cro-mo
Hub (listed in specs): Formula Alloy DC20

Pulled the front hub apart to find the pictured components.

I see that one cone, the nds, is heavily pitted/chipped. The other seems fine. Both races in the hubs also appear fine and feel smooth. A few ball bearings seem pitted and have surface flaws, more of the NDS balls show defects, only one fro the DS. Oh, I think 5/32", 10 per side.

Why the two different ball bearing types? The NDS balls are bronze colored, the DS the usual chrome. The NDS race shows the same color where the balls make contact. Are they different, and do they need to be replaced in two varieties?

Speaking of replacing, I'm guessing a new axle/cones and balls will remedy this. Are QR axles generic enough that any cones on a 100mm x 9mm replacement will work?Would you please look at the races and advise?

Couldn't believe that much damage could make SO much noise! Thanks for the advice!

You can keep the axle. The cone would need replacement or HEAVY rework. And while the actual cone bit CAN be generic enough, the challenge often lies in getting a seal to line up right.
Some balls do come with a coating of one-or-another supposed to improve performance. Can't say if it's coating staying on or coating coming off that has produced the colour in the pic. I'd replace with like and not worry about it. But it would be strange to have different kinds on the different sides.

LBS has axle assemblies and cones , buy new Bearing-balls of same size. Shimano standard followed by Many, would be 9 mm by 1 TPMM .

100 is the inside of the fork/ over-lock-nut distance.. the axle has to be longer than that ..

Perhaps the original Builder left the Axle too tight or grit contaminated the grease.
