Odd bottom bracket removal
 

New to biking componentry and attempting to upgrade a bike on my own. The bike I have currently has really crappy chinese components; so when trying to remove the BB I couldn't seem to figure out how to remove the drive side part part of BB (pic). I've tugged on in the flat ends with a crescent wrench with all my strength and it won't come loose, it's difficult enough with it only being 2.5mm in width! It doesn't look welded and I can see the threads, but I can't even figure out how to google a solution..

Are you aware that the right cup has a left hand thread, and unscrews clockwise? From the small dings I see in the photo I suspect that you're not and are turning it tighter not looser..

If you still can't loosen it with a large wrench, try using a bolt and large washers to hold the wrench flat to the cup so it cannot jump off. If that fails, there are various methods for removing very tight cup, but let's cross that bridg if/when we come to it.

I suspect (hope) that simply turning it in the right direction will have you on your way fast enough.

I suspected it was left threaded, but regardless it hasn't budged in either direction, even with the bolt+washer..

Rather than type what's been writen countless times already, I suggest you search for "how to remove a stuck bottom bracket cup" or various iterations of a similar phrase. You'll get links to videos and tutorials, showing various tools and techniques.

I have never had this method fail me.

Agreed that working smart beats working strong. A long bolt with big washers run through the BB cup and shell will "bolt" the wrench to the cup. Now one can pull, push, hammer, extra leverage the wrench without fear of it slipping off the cup. As soon as the cup begins to rotate stop and loosen up the through bolt. Andy.

Simplest of all. If you have a workbench with a vice. Grip those flats on the bottom bracket cup in the vice and you have the leverage of the frame to remove the cup

I did this with a frame. Tore the vice clean off its base! :lol:
