Tire Width Limits per Rim

Hey guys,

I was wondering how to determine the tire width limits of bicycle rims. Namely Velocity Deep V's, H Plus Son Formation Faces and HPS SL42's (all 700c).

All help appreciated.

Thanks!

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Here' a chart showing guidelines for tire and rim widths. Note that there' considerable fudge room to either side.

Tires that are wide compared to the rim tend to wallow when under inflated, and can cause loss of control when cornering. Also watch high pressure with wider tires because the stress on the rim is proportional to tire width X pressure.

OTOH - many find that tires that are narrow compared to the rim can give a harsh ride, though others say they give more precise handling.

Thank you very much. Most helpful... now I just have to figure out the interior rim widths. The websites seem to only list the exterior.

Before the big companies caught up , a Santa Cruz California custom builder removed a section, rolled a narrow road rim from 622>559 for MTB racing to get a light rim.

Now 29ers run pretty fat tires with rims about an inch wide.. if low rim weight matters..

They're usually about 5-6 mm narrower on the inside. If you Google around, some people have taken their own measurements of various H Plus Son rims...

Ah, yes. Back in the height of weight weenie nastiness. Road tires being labeled as 23s but being built as 21s so that their stated weight "blows the competition away". Constant narrowing of EVERYTHING only to actually get worse performance in nearly every category besides weight.... The good old days.
