27x1 1/4 same as 662 x 20?
 

I went to my LBS to get some spokes and took my rear wheel with me, they had problem removing the freewheel and broke the hub. So, I got the brand new wheel for $45.00 (xrims 404 made by alex 662x20), but the size of the width seems tad larger then my old schwinn 27 x 1 1/4. Is this the new standard size for 27 x 1 1/4?

Plus the new wheel isn't aligned correctly to the frame and wondered if a beginner should attempt to fix it.

Hi, I assume that you mean the OLN distance isnt the same, please be specific if you can. I just bought some of the same rims at nashbar, I think that the 662 is a misnomer, or some other spec that I dont know about. good luck.

Yeah, I think the 662 is a bit goofy; 27" are ISO 630; 700C are ISO 622. So whatever that 662 is, I don't think it's an ISO measurement!

If the wheel isn't dished right, I'd take that up with the shop that sold it to you as a replacement...

The Alex X404's are decent replacements for 27x1 1/4. They do look wide, but don't be worried about that. I have used them for a couple of bikes, but I think I'll try the Sun 27" rims next time. They are cheap (<$10/rim) and hold up nicely. One tip I would give is that the rim seam may have a sharp edge which will eat your brake pads. Just run your finger around the braking surface on the rim and if it's an issue you'll know right away. Take some fine emery cloth and smooth those seams off. I have been very happy with how well they hold true. That's based on a LOT of miles on them. But, I am very fussy about tensioning for the build. $45 is pretty cheap for a wheel (gotta be pretty close to cost for the parts alone), but if the alignment is off I'd take it up (in a friendly way) with the LBS. It's a good chance for both of you to find out something about the other. A good shop should take care of this. Good luck!

I was wrong about the alignment it's set up correctly, have to move the frame bracket about 3mm to slide the rear wheel in now. LBS mechanic was friendly and helpful (maybe because the owner was there :)) , I should have changed the tube/tire when I was there, just noticed my old tube valve doesn't fit the new rim.
