Help adjusting 3 Speed Shimano on a Dahon Boardwalk - NOS- New very Old Stock...cheap

Help adjusting 3 Speed Shimano on a Dahon Boardwalk - NOS- New but very Old (and odd) Stock... instructions were in Japanese but I got it very cheap. At this point I don't have a pulley on it -- or a cable stop (just a cable looped (no kinks) the whole way.

When first used it worked pretty well for months -- just so you know -- in the photos I am in the highest gear -- doesn't really shift easily -- seems to be jammed up or really hard to move -- sometimes can't move it...

This very odd Shamino Bell crank has a line marking -- and I have that the lined with the one on the push rod -- nut the bike is in highest gear... I had a little old shop in Bayonne NJ put this on for me.... Any pros out there that can get me back in gear?

Well I adjusted it to be on the line for 2nd gear -- but it is still hard shifting -- very hard sometimes to change into lower gears -- sometimes impossible. Any advice from experienced person?

Too much friction in the cable housing, maybe? You can minimize friction by using modern, lined housing and minimizing the length of housing, running bare cable for as much of the cable run as possible.

Thanks! So that is why most 3 speed use bare cable! I will need to figure out how to do it on a folder... Thanks!

Plus , Low is pulling harder , past 2nd, ... 3rd is (default when the cable breaks, and) when the lever releases tension..

I found in my older AW3, Mfg. circa 94, on my first Brompton, with their traditional trigger shifter

pulling the lever to get 1st/ low was a Lot more effort, than the newer S-A 3 speed coming in the current bike ..

Hub and shifter having been redesigned..

+ cable line smoothly curved, lined housing + a teflon coated cable.. die drawn slicked gear cables are about as good..
