Use only one shifter

I want to set up a bike for my wife as a 1x9 speed. She is currently riding a Specialized Dolce and we want to build up a bike with S&S couplers. She currently uses Shimano Sora ST-3400 STI shifters and we want to use the same setup on her new bike. Will there be any issues running the left (rear) shifter as a brake lever only?

Should be fine. The only negative I can think is that the shift lever may rattle and vibrate a bit without the shift cable tension keeping it in place. Not sure what type of spring is in there.
