Need a new fixed fork for an old bike

Hi all,

So I'm wanting to get a new fork for my 2001 Giant Rincon SE and I would like it to be cheap.

Now I don't necessarily want just some garbage fork but the bike is only worth about $100 - $150 if even due to age. It's still in great shape but I just don't want to spend $150 + on a new fork.

Any suggestions for brands or where to look. The bike is a Small so I'm not sure what that equates to in frame size from Giant but I would assume 15"

26 x 1.95 tires and 1 1/8" Headset from what I can tell from specs.

Thanks

If you have a local bike co-op, stop by and see if they have any laying around

Oh good point I never thought of that. We actually have 5 within a few blocks from each other.

Get on the bike and have a friend measure the resulting axle-to-crown distance. Try to match this as closely as possible.

The cheapest option appears to be the Nashbar rigid fork, though it's out of stock right now. Kona used to make the Project2, they come up on ebay from time to time. Surly 1x1 is another option, usually sells around 100$.

eBay lists over 17,000 bicycle forks; I would think one of them would work for you...

So you're saying there isn't a difference in all 17k of those in quality or price?

I get it lots of options, again as I mentioned in the first post I'm looking for something that isn't garbage quality but not very expensive.

I know nothing about different forks and brands and that's why I was asking here.

Thanks for the help though.

Actually - ebay lists 17,000+ ADVERTISEMENTS for forks - but many are redundant since they are the same new fork listed by a different seller, eh?

Used Rigid 26" forks yields 11 hits.

81 hits with the "used" filter removed.

I think the bike co-op is your best way forward to what you want - the biggest advantage over ebay being, of course, service.

Ok so I just measured the axel to crown and it's 444mm (17.5") I was also incorrect about the size of the frame it's a 17.

So with that information do I need to search for knowing this data. 26x1.95 tires and a 444 mm axle to crown.

I ordered a Sunlite Chromoly rigid fork from one of my local bike shops a few years ago and I want to say it was something like $60 or $70. I know Sunlite is kind of a low end brand but the quality looked as good as any other fork I've seen.

Thanks. Still going to check out the LBS and co-op but I'll keep that in mind.

If not that nashbar auxym mentioned might have to be it. Not a bad price and I just called them and it has an a2c of 453mm so really close to what is currently on the bike.

Was that ATC measurement with you on the bike?

I'd go for this $30 one if you're handy with a rattle can. The 410 ATC might drop the front end too much, though.

Yeah that was with me on the bike. I am about 160lbs and I don't move the suspension much just sitting.

That's the piece of info that was missing in your initial post.

The co-op is a good suggestion for what you want.

BTW, if your suspension fork is in decent shape they might swap you even for a rigid one + installation (one of the advantages of a co-op over LBS)...

So almost a year later I ended up getting a Mosso 7005 from eBay and this was after trying 2 different forks from my local co-op. While I like the fork I'm a little sad that the posts the brakes connect to seem to sit a little low. I don't have the clearance needed to attach my front fender to the mounting hole in the fork. I'll be able to fabricate something but just can't directly attach it.

I donated the suspension fork I had so the LBS next door installed the new fork for free. I can really tell the difference though with the weight of the bike and how much easier it is to ride now for commuting.

Now I just need to find a/some panniers to haul my work clothes/macbook air 11"/ and a few other odds and ends.
