Please help me compare these two component groups
 

I'm looking at two bikes. Frames are identical, only the components are different. The one with the better components has a worse color scheme than the other, and is $140 more which I'm less concerned about. Could you kindly guide me on which of these are noticeable upgrades?

Here are the component differences:

Crank: FSA Dyna Drive vs. Shiman T551 (inboard vs. outboard)

Brakes: Shimano M395 vs. M496

Shifter: Deore vs. SLX (9sp vs 10sp)

Front derail: Deore vs. XT (I don't use the front so much)

Rear derail: SLX vs. SLX Shadow

Cassette: HG20 vs. HG62

Hubs, center lock: RM35 vs. RM66

You can always buy the cheaper bike and upgrade it with the components you want . In most cases the frames are the same and the cost is in the components .

I'd be more concerned about which fit you better,and which one's ride/handling you preferred. That's what's really important,not which has the better parts. A test ride is a much better metric than a comparison of spec sheets.

I should have clarified that the frames are identical, Trek 8.5 vs. 8.6.

(hope we can avoid getting into the merits of this type of hybrid)

Shadow derailers sit closer inboard, and are less likely to get ripped off when riding on technical offroad trails. Having said that, a hybrid probably can't take you places where that matters

For any serious trail riding, the brakes and 10-speed shifter are definitely worth it. There's no question its worth the money from that perspective.

Having said that, get the cheaper bike with the better paint. The differences in components will only show up when you start pushing the bike to its limits. A hybrid is an inherently compromised design, its best for cruising around town. You will rarely be shifting aggressively, and even low end Shimano hydraulics are excellent compared to hydraulics from a few years ago. They'll get the job done, reliably and without complaint. Shifters are the same way. They may not shift downshift flawlessly when climbing a 12+% grade, but chances are, you'll never be doing that.
