XTR M951 group on LOOK? Will it float?
 

Hi guys,

I got a really badass Look KG381 Team frame and I's love to but an XTR M951 group on it.
Right now it has Mavic Aksium wheels on it which is (unfortunately?) for Campy 9-11 speed.

Do you guys know if this will fit? Can I even use the wheel?
I am still a novice so if this is a stupid idea, please tell me so.

confused here, with this post, and the contradictions made in your now edited post on the Hybrid forum.

What exactly have you got, and what do you intend to do, as not much is making sense at the moment.

From the sound of it, you are wanting to put a MTB groupset (do you really mean groupset, as with groupsets from this age, it means hubs as as well) on a road frame?,

From some quick googling, the Look 381 Team was a road bike, this would indicate, drop bars, being as M951 is MTB hardware, most parts will have major fit issues if fitted to a road frame - fit issues will include the BB, crank, shifter & brakes lever/STI's, brakes, FD and rear hub, the only parts which will fit are the front hub, chain & RD.

For the wheels, A Shimano cassette won't even fit on a freehub which is Campagnolo fitting.

You are correct, the Look is a pure bread road frame.
What I am trying to accomplish is a "frankenstein-ed" road bike for rough city riding with riser or flat handlebars.
I've always loved the look and feel of that era XTR and would love to put it onto the Look frame, hence my question if this is at all possible.

So I guess I will have to get a different/new crank that fits my BB and hubs that fit both the frame and the RD.
Brakes won't work? Sorry for the noob questions...

So I am also leaning towards scrapping the FD all together and only going with gear options in the back... I would guess that would simplify things.

Crank and BB will probably be fine. Rear hub will probably be 5mm too wide, front hub fine.

Front derailleur may or may not be able to clamp on in the right spot with the derailleur tab that I'd guess the Look has, may also need a shim depending on clamp diameter and seattube diameter. Some MTB front derailleurs will interfere with rear wheel on road bikes.

Looks like the Look uses clamp on FDs, so maybe fine there

BUT, the XTR FD might be top pull only, so there's that possible problem, also.

Then there's cable pull of the brake levers. Some XTRs are adjustable for use in short pull or long pull, some are long pull only, which would suck with road calipers.

Letterman Show used a Glass Sided Tank, and threw things in to see if they would Float.. On Camera. :lol:

The KG381 uses a braze on front derailleur which will be too high for a mountain bike crank. Maybe this is your best solution:Campagnolo Veloce Flatbar Shifters | Evans Cycles

What about if I were to not install an FD at all? Only shifting in the back?
Alternatively get a new crank?

The one in that pic looks like a clamp FD. OP's may be different, however.

Also, it's possible to get a top swing FD clamped below a road FD tab, esp with 42T big ring. Bigger rings would increase probability of small ring being locked out because of FD hitting the FD braze-on.

I owned a KG381 and also a couple of 481SL's They all had braze on derailleur hangers. The seat tube is not round at that point so you cannot use a clamp on front derailleur. Forget about using any mountain bike front derailleur on that bike

I see many KG381 with clamp derailleurs. Perhaps some years had braze-on.

But no way a m951 will leave room for a rear wheel, or any top swing FD, for that matter.
