Mileage on Cassette

What's a good rule of thumb for cassette life? I've got a problem with the chain skipping on one cog only when I climb (derailler is in good adjustment). I can't see anything indicating it's got worn or bad teeth, but it has about 4500 miles on it. I'm about to hit the LBS, but was hoping I could get some feedback before I head out.

How long is a rope? Is the chain worn? People get that many miles out of a chain and go thru several chains before the cassette is trash. Many don't. YMMV

I have about 6,000 miles on my cassette, and about 2,000 on my most recent chain. So far so good....

Sounds like you have worn that cog more than the others. Don't be surprised to find you need a new chain when you replace the cassette, if the old chain skips on the new cassette.. .

How many miles does it take for your chain to "stretch" 1/8" (or more)? Cassette wear is caused by chain wear or by cumulative lots-of-chains wear.

If you're not getting 6,000 miles on a decent cassette, you're doing something wrong. 10,000 miles is not exceptional.

Cassette lasts longer if you replace the chain more often..

Seems a little low, but it depends on how you ride. If you live in flat area you might spend a lot of time in a narrow range of gears and you'll wear those out even if the 11 or 28 hardly get touched.

Did a spammer bump this thread and then get removed? OP was in 2005.
